The ears, the teeth, the insomnia, I cant take much more

It's just a moan.

My DS2 has recurrent ear infections (five this year so far), he is teething terribly i.e. he has no teeth at 9 months despite all the classic signs of teething since 3.5 months. Poor mite is in constant discomfort and I feel awful for him.

Bottom line is that he doesn't bloody sleep and I am getting desparate. I haven't had more than 20 minutes unbroken sleep since last Saturday (21st May, yup 8 days and counting) and I can't take much more.

He has been referred to an ENT Surgeon but we have to wait 10 more days for the appointment. The paediatrician says that to add insult to injury he has more than likely got "hidden" gastric reflux and a split uvula (this means that the muscles that help to drain the tubes in the ears are incompetent and adds to his discomfort when his ears are infected).

As an absolute last resort we tried a mild sedative tonight but it hasn't worked, if anything he is more restless than usual.

At my wits end and feel very sad

poor dejags! poor ds2! lots n lots of sympathy for you both. I know how it feels to be sleep deprived & thank God that ds is now doing his nights. i think the worst aspect of having children is the lack of sleep. We really suffer. I wish I could come over & take care of ds2 for you for a few nights.

thanks Ambrosia, we've tried every permutation known to man. Trouble is, is that he hasn't slept well since birth. I am strict and structure daytime naps but it doesn't make a jots worth of difference.

The ears have only made it 10 times worse

I could never nap with ds. Dd was fine but with ds I was always tensed, waiting for the shrieking to start again. hell. It would have been worse with NO shrieking, though, IYSWIM. not much comfort for you ATM! when did you say you were seeing the specialist? what sedative did you give him? what about calpol for the pain? i guess you've already tried calpol, tho. hang on!

dejags · 30/05/2005 21:19

he is on Vallergan (sedative) and stopayne (stronger than paracetemol). The ENT is 10 days away and we are told that because he so little eardrum activity it is likely they will put grommets in.

sigh... I know I should go to bed I just can't bear the thought of having to get up in 20 minutes time.

oookay. so you've got all the stuff but no joy. what are grommets, btw? Mine have never had ear infections but i know most children have them. What about the reflux? doesn't sound too good.

update - after an absolutely AWFUL night we managed to get an emergency appointment with the ENT surgeon this morning.

He says that there is nothing for it but to do the operation on Thursday.

I am now off to start another thread about split uvulas as the consult this morning sparked off a whole new set of worries that DS has a hidden cleft palate

sigh

much love, support & best wishes to you and ds dejags. x

Fingers crossed for Thursday!

dejags, how awful. Sleep deprivation is the most awful thing about parenthood I hope the surgery on Thurs goes OK. Keep us posted.
