MMR and eggs.....

Just been reading mother and baby magasine in the bath and seen an article on jabs in general. Read all the little bits of info but then read a bit about MMR and it said that it was not to be given to babies with egg allergy as it's made using eggs. Never heard this from anyone before and now really worried as dd had egg allergy at 7 months. was told to try her on egg again at one year but really don't want to go through rushing to hospital again as we did before (sick, rash and general nightmare!). Anyone heard of this and what should i do? Am planning a visit to gp. dd is 10mths now so have a while before jab due but need to start thinking about this now i suppose, anyone got any experience?

The MMR vaccine is grown in egg, and children with allergies can react to it. Make sure that your GP knows about the allergy, he can arrange for you to have the MMR done at the hospital just in case there is a reaction.

ooh sounds scary. are the single jabs grown in egg?

It's not a big risk that there will be a reaction, even in children with egg allergies, because there's no more than a trace of the egg in the vaccine. It's more precaution than anything else. My friend's twins had severe egg allergies, but had no reaction at all to the MMR, if that's any consolation.

As far as I recall, the single vaccines aren't grown in egg, but I'm not 100% sure of that. Your GP will be able to tell you more about it.

my friend has same issue with her little gril and has been referred to hospital consultant. although she is still waiting and her dd is 2.

The MMR is not grown in egg - like the flu vaccine for instance.

One component was cultured from a chick a long time ago or something. The Mother and Baby magazine sounds very misleading.

If you have egg allergy and make a fuss you can usually have the MMR in hospital.

Don't know if this will be any use to you as it's about an adult, but I'll post it anyway.

My mil is allergic to ordinary eggs, but is ok with organic eggs. Could be worth trying your dd on organic rather than ordinary eggs, if you're going to try eggs again in the future?

will try organic ones, thanks. dd does not seem to have severe allergy as she tolerates pasta and other things with egg in them. visit to gp is on the cards me thinks. ta.

There is loads more egg in pasta containing egg than the risk from the MMR.
