dd1 had an alergic reaction to peanuts this morning, advice please

She had some of my peanut butter on toast and within in minutes was scratching her neck, her face came out in red blotches and her eyes gelled up.

Got an emergency appt at the docs and she gave me some Piritin but I have to have a follow up next week with a possibility of referal to hospital! Is this normal to get a referal to hospital?

Bit worried about it getting worse, any advice please.

Might not be on for long, she won't get off my knee and dd2 is teething so am going to have my hands full, but will check in later.

xx

PPH!!! WOWOWOWOWOWOW! Congratulations! 4?!? Are you mad oh royal looney?

misdee · 27/05/2005 14:05

congratulations PPH. its best to avoid peanuts in pregmnancy and whilst breastfeeding if there are allergies/eczema/asthma in your family already.

so i am stil lpeanut free

tamum · 27/05/2005 14:07

I think a referral to hospital is, or should be, standard. My ds has an allergy to walnuts that we only discovered fairly recently, and he now has an epipen. It's good that they're taking it seriously really, but I know how worrying it is.

Did Nigella not consider the people who might be in A and E with peanut allergies?

PPH, congratulations

misdee · 27/05/2005 14:09

good point tamum, so i'dd stick to a+e car park if i ever get the courage up to try the kdis with peanuts.

tamum · 27/05/2005 14:10

I know the chances are slim, but it's a bit thoughtless, isn't it! Car park sounds like a good bet

Thanks all. She is in bed now but has been behaving v badly - pulling hair, throwing washing on the floor etc and she normally is ok (for a toddler lol). Is there something in the Piritin? I noticed a few E numbers.

Eyes are still puffy but she seems better than this am, v worrying. I don't think she has had peanuts before but the nurse said such a high concentrate in the peanut butter would have kicked it off.

Dh has taken pity on me and come home from work early to take dd2 out in the pram - she is refusing to sleep!!!! One of those days .

Are you mad PPH? Congrats btw (you thread hogger [wink).

The previous exposure may have been skin contact or a product with arachis oil (peanut oil in normal terms). DS didn't even swallow the peanut, he spit it up started crying and in 5 minutes he had the rash and puffy eyes... so, it may happen. Hope she feels better soon.

UPDATE:

We have an appointment at the hospital tomorrow - what sort of tests can I expect? Blood tests or skin tests?

dd1 is a sensitive one for new situations so I think she will be a nightmare, so want to know what to expect.

Ta.

Olive Oil - She'll get a blood test if its just for a food allergy. Skin reactions are usually tested when looking at allergies to eg. Nickel, lanolin, latex etc.

Hope it all goes well. Its good you got this milder rection ow.... the next one would probably be much more severe. At least you can be prepared. It must be very scary for you just now.

oliveoil · 21/06/2005 11:12

Oh good god, blood tests. You will be able to hear her in bonny scots . Yes it is a bit of a worry, I keep telling her we are off to see the new doctor tomorrow and she frowns and says 'NO'.

Am well impressed with the NHS though, not much more than 3 weeks from reaction to appointment.

CD - v interested in the excercise related food allergy. I sometimes get appalling hives when I walk somewhere (ie go for a walk) and sometimes not. Never considered it might be food related. It's absolutely vile when it happens. I literally can't move for itching and breathlessness. DH has had to walk a couple of miles back home to get the car to retrieve me in the past. I wondered why it only happened sometimes. Gosh, I wonder what causes it.

aloha · 22/06/2005 10:56

Sorry Oliveoil - good luck with the tests. Take chocolate! Insert chocolate into child's mouth at exact moment the needle goes in - works a treat with ds, the greedy little piggy.

emily05 · 22/06/2005 11:00

You are really lucky to have been referred. Ds came up with the same reaction as your dd, but to egg. I am too scared to give him nuts because of his reaction. Doctor just gave us piritin and steroids for if he has a bad reaction and sent us away!

Good luck.

oliveoil · 22/06/2005 12:25

Thanks for the messages. Just back from hospital and she had to have blood taken . They put some cream on her arms for 30 mins which worked like an anesthetic (sp?) I suppose, but I told her it was magic cream. She sobbed all the way through it but the nurses were brilliant and were distracting her with bubbles and squeaky toys etc.

She was very brave but kept sobbing 'I don't like it in here mummy' and I felt dreadful. But she was bribed with biscuits and marshmallows after and got her promised toy from Tesco's so all is well now.

Have to keep her off nuts until we get the results, 6 weeks, so am going to be on guard.

Glad it's all over OO. Poor wee soul. At least now you'll know.

Lonelymum · 23/06/2005 13:09

Poor you - I mean about having to keep her off nuts. We don't have a nut allergy in our family but I am constantly noticing packages which say "Made in a factory containing nuts" and I often think what a nightmare it must be trying to avoid all those food products.
