Why on my operation info sheet does it specify "tea and toast"?!

It says at 7am "tea and toast can be taken" then water until 10.30, then nothing.

Now I love tea and toast, but am just wondering why it specifically says that?! Why not "a light breakfast"?

because a 'light breakfast' to some is 1 rasher of bacon (not 2), 2 pieces of toast (not 4), 2 sausages (not 2)..... See what I mean?

Are you ill Giraffes? You OK?

giraffesCantCatchSwineFlu · 03/08/2009 00:41

Aah ok. I usually have tea and toast anyway so thats fine. Im fine (well I am getting over s.flu and suspect I have a sinusy issue going on now) but am ok. Its the op to fix my silly wrist, hurt it in May Been off alllll summer waiting for the op. Just been reading the forms to see what happens if you are ill. I so can't put this off, bit worried.

What's one person's light breakfast is another's full meal and pudding.

I hope it will be OK. Are they doing it with a spinal block/local rather then a GA?

giraffesCantCatchSwineFlu · 03/08/2009 00:49

Only time I discussed it was in June and I was sobbing (had expected consultant to say all was ok) so I didn't take much in. Was told GA and would need 2 ops, I've convinced myself it will just be one op though (denial is key )

I'd rather have a GA then a spinal any day to be honest. Ignorance is bliss!! What did you break? Scaphoid?

giraffesCantCatchSwineFlu · 03/08/2009 00:53

No they thought it was scaphoid - thats why i was having repeat xrays. But that seems fine, its the ligaments that are split/torn or whatever the word is. Did it by falling off a wall in a soft play centre haha

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 03/08/2009 00:56

Ahh. I'm training at a specialist hand centre so have seen alot. These don't take too long, you should have a small zig zag scar (which is cool, looks like the Harry Pottter scar but on a hand ), it normally depends on the anaesthetist, they can do it under a spinal but it depends on the risk factor to the patient. A GA is better.

Soft play is the spawn of satan!

giraffesCantCatchSwineFlu · 03/08/2009 01:01

They are doing something with a telescope first. In some ways Id rather be awake but I also don't want anything going near my spine!!! UUUGH!!! oopsagain was waiting to find out if she had a scaphoid injury too but not seen her posting. Do you want to come and be there for my op? You can hold my (good) hand lol

OP posts:
FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 03/08/2009 01:05

I'll hunt that out. They can't diagnose scaphiods, they have to repeat the x-rays after 10 days as the fractures don't show up straight away. They are little buggers!

I'd love to. I'm just a mere student radiographer though so I have to pretend to be ignorant because I make the medical students feel bad. I'm hoping to change my course soon though.

FBG have you seen any Carpal Tunnel Ops? I need to have both of mine done as I have a 35% reduction. Should I have both done at the same time? Any information gratefully received, the consultant only tells you when you go in for the op!

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 03/08/2009 12:33

If you need both of them done then I'd opt for the one that's bothering you the most being done first, then leaving the other for a while rather then having them done at the same time. It will be hard if one hand is in a splint, if 2 hands are in a splint at the same time then you'd be able to do very little/nothing for yourself.

Here's some information hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/html/carpal_tunnel_surgery.html

alibubbles · 04/08/2009 08:08

Thank you, that was very informative. My consultant did say have both done at the same time, but I am a childminder and DH works abroad Mon - Fri so I would be without any help if I needed it! I will have just the right one done to start then. Thx.

alibubbles · 04/08/2009 16:26

I have my op booked for 24th August. I was offered next week!

TitsalinaBumsquash · 04/08/2009 16:34

I have just had my CPT done, i have problems with both but opted for the Left first as it was thw worst, i had it under LA and it was fine, the needle scratched a bit but after that i felt nothing, recovery was 2 weeks and now i have a barely visable scar and no CPT in that hand! I had it done end of June so its only been a month.

MovingOutOfBlighty · 04/08/2009 16:37

Once I was working on a ward where a farmer had to tell me what he had for his 'light breakfast' before an operation.

He had 2 sausages, bacon, beans and toast and 3 cups of tea.

In a normal day he would have eaten twice as much so it was, to him, a 'light breakfast'! Perhaps that is why they are more specific!

alibubbles · 04/08/2009 17:33

Titsalinabumsquash, what do mean the recovery was 2 weeks? What did that involve? I am a childminder! I have told the families I will take 2 days off, is that going to be a problem?

Any details gratefully received! Thank you
