I had a coil fitted last year and found it was very painful. It brought tears to my eyes and i eventually ended up crying. I could have done with some Gas and Air....really. A gynaecologist i saw once says you can have gas and air when having the coil fitted...wish i could have has this. I had mine fitted in my GPs surgery by a female GP...but god it hurt. Like childbirth, cramps. Am i alone or is this common ?? Dreading the day i have to have it out..will it hurt as much, can i have gas and air. ?? I did have a previous coil fitted many years ago under anaesthetic during a n operation and then had it out at my Gps. It ached a bit but nothing like having my present one fitted.
Your thoughts and comments welcomed.

I found it agonsy first time when I had it done at the GPs. I had had a CS with DC1. Removing it was not painful.

Second time (after VBAC) was uncomforatable but not painful - I insisted on a Gyna rather than GP.

Second removal wasn't painful - removed under general whilst they were removing the ruptured ectopic pregnancy and ovarian cysts caused by the Mirena

norktasticninja, you are right I should investigate it further, but really I am almost phobic about people poking around down there. After my first baby I had a horrendous experience of having a third degree tear stitched when the midwife wouldn't believe me that the LA didn't work. I couldn't go through anything like that again, I can feel the pain again just thinking about it. Honestly it was akin to torture and I had to scream at her to stop. I am a woos I admit it, I think I will go for the jab instead.

I had a coil fitted four years ago. The pain was noting like I had ever experienced. I have had 2 C sections, a slipped disc and several root canals and I am generally regarded as being pretty good at dealing with pain. Last week I went to have it removed. The pain was worse than I could have imagined. I was screaming in pain. It appears the coil has become imbedded and may have to be surgically removed. The Doctor told me it was more painful because I am an "older" woman. I am 54 soon. While I was recovering from having mine inserted, another woman, much younger than me went in. She was screaming too "no, no make her stop" I am thinking about complaining to the quality care commission about this Doctor but I want to know if mine was a normal experience. Surely we would all know about it if this were so. Seeking other women's experiences and opinions

I'm 45 and have just had the last one removed (after 5 years) and a new one put in.

My dr was very reassuring - I've had c-sections (not through choice) so my cervix wasn't as pliable as one that had been through a normal birth and it did hurt.

I also took painkillers beforehand, ate a ton of chocolate afterwards and next time I am going to take something to grab tightly while they do it.

They told me to rest this afternoon so don't plan anything major after it!

I fainted when the GP cranked open my cervix. Ended up in A & E. I wouldn't recommend one to anyone. Barbaric, medieval and pure torture.

rosie39forever · 26/10/2016 20:14

I had mirena 6 weeks ago, I had a c-section so am quite intact down there as the gp put it!! found it more like intense pressure for only a minute then all over and done and drove home. I think it really depends who fits it, my gp has been fitting coils for over 20 years and was really quick and talked me through it.

ohdofeckoffnowdear · 26/10/2016 20:38

I didn't find it that bad, I've had mine taken out now because it really didn't agree with me. Felt like intense period cramps, was fine after 5 mins. Also taken it out was fine, no pain just a weird feeling when they are pulling it out. Don't be scared Smile

SilverMachine · 26/10/2016 20:50

I have had two Mirena coils fitted.

The second time I had it fitted in my local family planning clinic and saw a qualified gynaecologist. I was given a local anaesthetic injection in my cervix (a scary thought as it is a long needle but you obviously can't see them do it a fit doesn't hurt!) it was fine with the local anaesthetic, not painful at all and just a bit of period like pain a few hours after.

I would recommend getting any coil fitted by a well experienced practitioner and definitely ask if they can give a local anaesthetic.

AnnaFiveTowns · 26/10/2016 20:55

The pain was worse than giving birth and lasted for hours after. It was horrendous; the most painful thing that's ever happened to me. They got two female doctors in to do it. I was dreading having it removed but I didn't feel a thing when they pulled it out.

daryldixonishot · 26/10/2016 21:01

First one was horrific! At family planning clinic, they sat me down & made me a cup of tea afterwards I looked so bad!
They are brilliant though so I did go back after 5 years for another one!
Had gas & air! still hurt but not quite as much!

mudandmayhem01 · 27/10/2016 06:19

Anyone reading here please don't be put off by these horrific stories. I had mine done 2 weeks ago at the gum clinic of my local teaching hospital. The male doctor who did it was so quick and efficient, I had one moment of mild discomfort and then thought right here goes and he said all done now. I was chatting to the hca who acted as chaperone and said how painless it was compared to when I had the last one at the GP. She said that fitting coils was the major part of this mans job and he is a real expert and rarely causes anyone any pain. I think avoiding a gp is probably a good idea for this one!

IDismyname · 27/10/2016 06:31

I've had a few problems with my coils over the years, but am now on number 3, so can't be all bad!

Suggest you get yourself to the gynae department in your hospital. I had a local injection, and the whole thing was over in about 6 or 7 minutes. They know what they're doing if you have a 'tricky cervix' like me.

angus6 · 27/10/2016 06:44

Had Mirena fitted a few years ago. It was very painful, ( done with no pain relief or injections by local GP) but only for a few minutes. It then settled down into the kind of cramping you'd expect which lasted about 10 days. I've also had no natural births so GP said my cervix was tight shut.

After about three years it seemed to gradually come loose until it got to the point i was able to remove it myself with no more fuss than removing a tampon.

pklme · 27/10/2016 07:08

I felt like I had been assaulted. Shocked. It also didn't work for me, and turned out to have partially come out.

When it was removed a year later I didn't feel a thing. Nothing. Well, relief!

Mouse510 · 27/10/2016 13:38

I had a mirena coil fitted around 4 years ago - there was a little discomfort but nothing bad at all. I had some cramping that evening but, again, nothing that bad. I had a little spotting for a few days and that was it. I didn't have another period until after it was removed earlier this year. There was no discomfort at all when it was removed. I felt a tiny bit crampy that evening if anything. I'm now 21 weeks pregnant with DC1 but once our family is complete I will not hesitate to have another mirena coil fitted. I rave about the mirena coil whenever I get the chance. I know some people don't get on with them but for me it was perfect!
