Palpitations, What should I do?

Over the past few days I have noticed what feel like heart palpitations, I can feel my heart going 'funny'.

I've also been feeling a bit dizzy.

I've just put this down to tiredness as I have 3 ds and the youngest is 10 weeks.

I am overweight but an losing it by healthy eating.

Would you go to the DR or just ignore it i'm worried he would just dismiss as i'm on the larger side.

Thanks

But childbearing aside, can one expect to find a level and stick at it for a while at least, or will it always be this kind of rollercoaster?

fatsatsuma - I've been on 125mg for about six years (barring pregnancy).

But do watch out - before that I had been on 200mcg for many years with my (ex) GP. I kept going to see him with heart palps and a rising sense of anxiety about things I'd never been anxious about before (really wasn't an anxious person).

The anxiety got worse and I really began to feel like I was going mad. Eventually took myself to a private shrink who did some tests (apparently thyroid levels are one of the first tests they do as they can have a major impact on brain function) and referred me to a private endocrinologist.

Turns out my 'madness' (which really had changed my personality and had caused a near breakdown as I was so scared that I was losing my mind) was an overdose of thyroxine. Unfortunately I'm still left with a bit of OCD which was triggered as a direct result of my thyroid being overloaded.

Horrible experience (but very rare!) - but a lesson in how important proper thyroid function is!

makedoandmend - poor you, that's awful .
Terrible that your original GP didn't pick up on it.

Thanks for the warning tho'. I had heard of the dangers of overdosing on thyroxine but no specifics.

Most of the time - apart from taking the pills (and the crappy GP incident), it's fine and I forget I have it (and it's been 32 years!)

LeonieSoSleepy - sorry to hear you had an thyroid induced anxiety too. It really does feel like you're going mad doesn't it.

As my (new!) doctor said to me about the whole episode - at least now I recognise the symptoms of too much thyroxine so I'll make sure it never happens again!

palpitations are a symptom of hypothyroid (underactive) although people generally associate them with an over active thyroid.I have had problems with palpitations that have been worse after each baby and now my thyroid is showing as underactive, but borderline.I am seeing a hormonal specialist privately in a few weeks as my FSH levels are high too and I am possibly being tipped into early ovarian failure.Your thyroid can affect your whole hormonal system so get it checked out asap-good luck.
