baby wakes up gagging

My 3 month old DD wakes up in the morning gagging. It is very scary as she looks like she is choking, not coughing. Her eyes bulge out and she just makes little gag noises as she tries to take in a breath but she cannot.

I pick her up, turn her onto her front and pat her back and that clears it but of course I am really scared that she will do this when I am fast asleep and unable to help her, and she will not be able to recover on her own. So I am spending most nights wide awake listening.

She sounds really conjested in the morning, like she has lots of plegm in her chest, so I am sure the gagging is caused by mucus going the wrong way. She does not have a cold.

I have tilted the crib so her head is slightly raised, left a kettle on in the room to make it humid, used olibas oil, but it still happens about 2-3 times a week.

It started at 8 weeks.

I am now thinking it is a dust might allergy as the bedroom is the only room with carpets - she is in a crib next to our bed. Her father's family has asthma & ecsema and he had a lot of allergies as a child.

I was hoping that someone could say they had the same problem and solved it. I have searched the net a lot and come up with nothing. Is my baby the only one to do this? Please help!

Onjix ... this must be very worrying for you ... have you been to the doctor about it?

onjix · 09/05/2003 15:44

Doctor said if you were to leave her she would recover - so try leaving her! She said a baby's reflexes are as good as an adults.

She also said that even if she did pass out - which is highly unlikely - the body's reflexes would start her breathing again.

Said it would not be an allergy.

She also said her throat muscles will be weak so need to strengthen.

Also recommended letting her sleep slightly on her side.

Finally - doctor said no treatment could be given anyway.

So no comfort there.

Have tried leaving her for about 15 seconds but she really seems to be choking so I have to pick her up.

Thanks Rowbinw for the messages. It was a bad night as I think she now does have a 'cough' of some kind so this happened a lot not just on waking.

She's breastfed and I have already eliminated 95% dairy to help with her colic, which it has. It's all fun and games, isn't it? I did not know about it causing mucus problems too, though.

Was at doctors yesterday and she checked throat and chest and saw nothing wrong. She's my first so I have no idea on what is normal or not.

I am getting advice today from others (nanny and midwife) and will post another message if anything new is said.

Hi,

I have been experiencing the same with my 3 month old and don't seem to be getting any answers on Google. And then I saw your old post!

Before I go to the doctors, did you ever receive any answers/ remedies to stop this from happening?
