has anybody else done this.

did you get any pain, did you go to dentist even if you are petrified of the dentist.

it was abit of my wisdom tooth that i broke off.

I was just kidding.

That sounds like a horrible practice, none of our staff would do that, honestly.

Most dentists will tell you to raise your hand or something if you need a break, they will probably tell you to do this before they start.

pinkkoala · 23/07/2009 13:48

ok that sounds like a good idea.
one more question. are the injections as bad as they say, and does it nub it completely not like when i had stitches after having dd.

OP posts:
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/07/2009 13:52

it will numb it completely, and they will check it has before proceeding, and if it hasnt they can top it up. And people tell me nearly every day that they hardly felt the injection, honestly.

pinkkoala · 23/07/2009 13:53

can they use numbing gel before the injection.

OP posts:
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/07/2009 13:56

they sometimes can and sometimes cant, depends on the tooth. The injection will be mostly like a hard pressure though, honestly

Hey, sorry your tooth broke. One of my front teeth broke last year and the dentist made a beautiful job of it, no needles required, no pain and a lovely looking tooth patched up! Actually looks better than the others now!! He did warn me that the fake bit might break off and need to be stuck back on, but so far, so good. He was going to fix it with amalgam which is the lead stuff you get on the NHS, but I paid extra for White stuff which looks like tooth enamel.

Dont be scared ((HUGS))

lal123 · 23/07/2009 14:32

I hate the dentist too (though not quite as badly as you!) and had avoided one for about 8 years. I broke one of my back teeth and was dreading going to get it sorted - like you no pain. Anyway - dentist was great, didn't need an injection - just got it filled and its been great since. Also - since then I have been going regularly to the dentist, current one is magic (think she relatively recently qualified).
good luck xxx

its nice to know i am not the only wimp(phobic) about dentists.

i am really not sure what they will do with my tooth, its a wisdom tooth right at the very back, but i really don't want it out.

i have broke a fairly big bit off and it has gone down to the gum, but as yet have no pain.

i have been cleaning and using mouthwash regular, but still have to wait two weeks to get in at dentist, they are very busy.

i am dreading the x-rays, and the news of what they will do with my tooth, and the needle.

my husband is coming with me, he rang the dentist yesterday to try and get earlier appointment as i am not sleeping and am very tearful.

i really wish i could overcome this fear as i have no fear like this of anything else.

i used to be terrified of spiders, but managed to overcome that a bit when i came face to face with a tarantula in a reptile show and surprised myself by holding it in my hand, with the reptile keeper next to me. i am now not as bad with them. i would like to be able to overcome my fear of dentists enough to be able not to get in a state and to be able to go on my own without my husband holding my hand, any suggestions.

have any of you broke big bits off the tooth or little bits.

pink koala, have you thought about seeing your GP to get something you can take before you go? i hadnt been to the dentist in years but spoke to my GP, she gave me diazepam. this took the edge off my nerves and allowed me to make several visits. it didnt make me feel out of control and i was still a bit nervous, but not vomiting, shaking etc like previously.
might be worth a try!

pinkkoala · 25/07/2009 09:09

what does it do, does it make you calmer or a bit lightheaded, does it have side effects.
i can manage a scale and polish as long as i know thats all i'm going for, but the check up and the not knowing what she will do, and the needles is the major problem.

because its my wisdom tooth and so far back it's making me worse. they say you don't need your wisdom teeth so i am worried they will take it out. That i can't face at all.

i keep thinking if its not hurting, i can brush it, rinse with mouth wash, eat ice cream etc, shall i cancel and leave it alone while it isn't hurting.

OP posts:
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 25/07/2009 10:45

If you cancel you run the risk of it getting infected, which will hurt very much and mean it does have to come out, if you go, they might just patch it up, you have to go really.

pinkkoala · 25/07/2009 11:58

if i could go now and not have to wait another two weeks that would be much easier, surely by leavingtwo weeks it will get worse.

the receptionist told me its not an emergency unless in severe pain, some people leave broken teeth for months.

i can't get in any sooner, i wish i could.

my husband has told me to go to docs and see if he can give me anything, or any other therapy that isn't drug related.

any thoughts on that.

OP posts:
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 26/07/2009 09:23

That is hard, we tend to see people with broken teeth straight away for a quick look so we can see if they can safely be left.

The doctor can't give you anything for your broken tooth, really.

Maybe you could keep trying for a cancellation, I know we get them all the time.

pinkkoala · 30/07/2009 06:50

just thought i would update you all.

managed to get cancellation on tues just gone, husband took me to the dentist, i couldn't manage the x-ray, as too anxious. once i had calmed down i asked him to try again at which point he said he was running late and hadn't got time.

got back in at dentist yesterday with a nice female dentist, also went to docs and got some diazepam to calm my nerves. managed to get check up and 3 xrays done. but wisdom tooth needs to come out, no other treatment though.

they have reffered me to have sedation to take it out, i would really like to hear from people who have had experience of this so i know wehat to expext and what questions i need to ask the dentist. i am a bit worried about being awake will they do it, but not worth general for one tooth.

can anybody help me through this.

one more question as we have nhs dentist, they have told me could be 2-3 month wait before it gets done, is there anyway we could go private either at a hospital or another dentist to get it done quicker.

OP posts:
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 30/07/2009 07:31

You could ask the dentist about that, but it would be very expensive.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 30/07/2009 07:36

they would have to refer you, so they are better to answer your questions.

pinkkoala · 30/07/2009 08:00

would i need to contact my dentist again to ask about being refferd private and would they tell me how much it would cost.

what do you think the waiting time would be.

OP posts:
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 30/07/2009 08:12

Yes you'd need to contact them. I have no idea about the waiting times or costs in your area, I'm afraid.

pinkkoala · 30/07/2009 10:29

anybody else had sedation dentistry and can help me.

i am a very nervous patient had't been to dentist in 4 years as last dentist was a prat and liked to do fillings with no numbing. and broke a tooth 2 months ago. because i am pregnant they couldn't xray so said as no pain we will leave it. fast forward to sunday terrible toothache emergency appt. they pulled it out as couldn't xray to see if anything else could be done.
worse bit was the injection on roof of my mouth really hurt like being sractched with a big stick. but having tooth pulled was fine it didn't hurt at all. dentist gave me her ipod and nurse covered my ears with her hands and held firmly. as it was a top tooth it sounded awful inside my head lots of cracking but was over in 2 mins tops.
i love my dentist she told me exactly what she was doing reminded me to breathe and assured me i was doing great.
totally felt safe in her hands and feel less anxious generally about dentistry.

Fillyjonk · 30/07/2009 20:28

am also very nervous of dentists

what has helped 100x is finding one i really trust

she explains everything and takes things slowly.

she uses gel to numb the injection site

I think if you are not happy with your practice, change practices. Some dentists are much better than others at dealing with nervous patients. I personally think, if you can, it is well worth paying for a good private dentist if that is what it takes-your teeth will hopefull be with you for life.

If you ask around locally on the grapevine there will be dentists with a good reputation for nervous patients. Or post on here!

Fillyjonk · 30/07/2009 20:29

(btw, I can "hear" how nervous you are.

but honestly, if I can do it, anyone can! I am sitting in the waiting room pacing up and down, actually trembling, and this is just for a scale and polish. My dentist is lovely but I had a bloody horrible experience with a dentist when I was a child)

pinkkoala · 31/07/2009 13:01

afternoon

my husband and i have decided to go orivate for this tooth, my dentist still wants me sedated by iv, i was willing to try with stronger diazepan and local injection but she said no.

we have rang another dentist who will be dealing with me private, it is a very new practice and receptionist have said that they have a man who deals with lots of nervous patients and does sedations. i am seeing him on friday and then booked in for a big appt on saturday to have tooth out, he is going to give me a check up and xray again on friday and then if it is ok to do he will do it on saturday, they are aware that i am very phobic and have had to take diazepan to get x-rays done. my doc says he can give me stronger dose of diazepan up to 10mg if i don't want to be sedated. i took 4mg to get check up and xray done before.

the nhs have told me its a 6 month wait to be seen, thats a joke, i will only be worrying about it so we have decided to go private.

have told new dentist if he manages to make it as stress free as poss, we will consider changing as our dentist is leaving our practice soon and then will have to get to know someone else.

i will be taking my husband along and have also been told that even if sedated he can stay with me.

i have heard so many horror stories about wisdom teeth its making me worse.

anybody out there taken high dose of diazepan or sedation to get this done, if so would be grateful to hear.

OP posts:
pinkkoala · 01/08/2009 08:05

morning

sorry to go on but i really don't fancy the idea of being sedated, i would rather try stronger diazepan and some sort of distraction, do you think this would work.

i am more worried about sedation than having the tooth out.

what would any of you do.

i am worried about the side effects of sedation and am supposed to be at a christening next sunday, i am worried the side effect say nausea, sickness and can be in system for 24 hrs which i don't want.
