AAAARGH!!! Not what I expected when I opened this thread!!!!!!!!!

I won't be going on the coil coz I'm paranoid about being allergic to it and also, I'm a wimp!!!

ScummyMummy · 08/05/2003 21:37

No, not really! I was hugely embarrassed- don't know why as I thought I'd be over all that after the joys of child birth- but it was fine apart from that and a period pain type of feeling for a while. Oh, and meeting the person who put it in for me on the bus a good while later and smiling at her cos I couldn't remember who she was but thought she looked familiar, then remembering and turning the pinkest of pinks was much worse than the actual insertion...

tigermoth · 09/05/2003 11:03

Not so much kebbabed, more like being injected, edgarcar. A bit more pain than the average injection, IME, but only for a minute.

Ghosty · 09/05/2003 11:05

OK ... yukky ... not looking at this thread anymore ...
(LOL Scummy!)

SamboM · 09/05/2003 11:09

I thought about having a coil but heard it can slip down and the end can jab into the end of willy during sex which kind of put me off (and dh when I told him!) Is that true?

Ghosty · 09/05/2003 11:10

Oh SamboM ... I really wish I hadn't come back now!!

SamboM · 09/05/2003 11:13

Sorry, but i really would like to know

susanmt · 09/05/2003 11:32

I had no bother with it being put in, loved it for a whole year, had no periods, no migraines (which were linked to ovulation with me) and ne PMT. A couple of months of feeling funny, went for my check and it had slipped down into my cervix and I had got pregnant!
This is VERY VERY rare, but my advice would be, if you think there might be something wrong with your coil (if you can feel it, or, like me, I started to feel all hormonal again - this was with mirena) then get it checked before it is too late!

SamboM · 09/05/2003 11:32

No periods? Really? How fantastic!

Furball · 09/05/2003 13:03

It depends on which coil you have as to whether you still have periods or not, though why anyone would have the coil where you still have periods is a mystery.

Fitting is uncomfortable and embarassing (had a c-section so noones really peered up my, well apart from smears - I always lower the tone somehow!!)
Anyway my doctor told me to take pain killers an hour before hand and it wasn't pleasant but not unbearable. You'll be fine.

Lindy · 09/05/2003 13:58

Hey edgarcat - I thought you were joking on the other thread about having a coil - but obviously we have a lot more in common that a birthday!! (Happy Birthday by the way in case we don't 'meet' on any other thread today - or at the party!!). I have been seriously trying to convince myself to have a coil fitted, should have gone for the initial discussion this week but chickened out ...... good luck, and let us know how you get on.

pie · 09/05/2003 17:27

SamboM, my friend had to have her coil removed as it was stabbing her boyfriend quite badly. Like susanmt I got pregnant with my coil in, susanmt's sounds like Marina which also releases the hormones and if they stick out then they will fail. Mine was actually in properly, but not hormone releasing and now I'm 17 weeks gone. Feeling like an injection is one of the closest things to my experience that I have seen written hear. I did shake for a while afterwards and the clinic made me sit and drink lots of sugary tea, but I tend to go into shock over anything!!!

pie · 09/05/2003 17:49

Just realised that it looks like coil ladies are getting pregnant at the drop of a hat!!!

I had mine in for 2.5 years and was just unlucky to be the 1 in 100 it fails for. Well unlucky according to my DH, but I'm chuffed

Well, i had my mirena coil fitted at my 6 week check and all I can say is that I was so busy expecting pain when she put it in, I didn't actually realize it was in until my gp told me she was all done. There are certain positions during sex where I find that I am uncomfortable, but I'm not sure if it's due to the coil or the aftermath of childbirth (dd is only 7 mo.). Dh hasn't complained, but then again, I don't think anything could keep him away. I haven't had a period since I had it, but I am bfing too, so I don't know if it's that or the coil. I would highly recommend it.

WideWebWitch · 10/05/2003 00:19

I'd recommend it too. I had the one with no hormones so had periods and they were slightly heavier. It did hurt, yes but it's all over quite quickly and I was OK afterwards with a nurofen. I thought it was good too, didn't have to think about it, no hormones, didn't get pregnant. Heavier periods were the only downside but overall it was worth it. Honestly, on a scale of 1-100 compared to childbirth with childbirth at 100 and stubbing your toe at a 1, it was only about a 10 for me. Don't know if that helps or not!

susanmt · 10/05/2003 09:46

Meant to say that when I saw the doc last week we asked what were the chances of what happened to us happening again (already thinking about afterwards - even if dh goes for the snip the advantages to me of mirena were so great I would go for it again) and the doc looked it up. Chance of mirena slipping and pregnancy occuring - unknown but thought to be 1 : 100 000 to 200 000. So not quite 1 in a million but not a significant risk!

I had mine put in 9 weeks after birth and did not even notice, honestly, cause my cervix was still open a bit so made it nice and easy! Got period type pains after for the rest of the day and that was it.

all done - no problem
