Mainly after medical advice (although other advice appreciated).

This may be long so I will thank you in advance for your time.

Background info: ds was born with a bowel disorder, surgically he is "fixed" although still under his surgeons care. Due to the operations he has had in his 2 yrs of life his immune system is not the best and we find that whatever is going around ds tends to get it and gets it bad. It also affects his tummy.

An example would be: us on a day trip to lapland last dec. Ds became ill on the flight and saw us in a finnish hospital for 4 hours..

Thinking about it, each holiday abroard we have had has seen us taking him to the docs.

Now..............as a family we are not seen as at risk of swine flu. Fine. BUT that doesn't mean we won't get it and what worries us is if we get it and ds gets it mainly his ability of fighting it.
Although given what ds has been through, he is still not an at risk toddler.

We are wanting to book a holiday abroard in Aug (dd due to start school so want a last sunshine hol before she starts school). We always feel illness are picked up on the plane and it seems that the majority with/having had swine flu are coming from hols.

I today spoke to our local private childrens immunisation centre. They confirmed no flu vac's available atm and nothing to protect against swine flu BUT suggest buying tamiflu to take either orally as a precaution on hol OR to take an if anyone becomes ill on hol then we have immediate supplies (even if its taken and turns out it wasn't swine flue iykwim).

We understand that swine flu can be contracted abroard as well as within the uk so don't really want to be scared out of flying iykwim.

I know we may sound OTT but we are the type of parents who would rather be this way. We are in a situation where we can buy tamiflu and can buy it now while stocks are available and also esp as this situation is expected to go worse over the coming months.

So, would you buy tamiflu and would you tavel abroard..?

TIA xx

If every holiday abroad = taking him to the docs then I'd reconsider the holiday plan

Iworryalot · 14/07/2009 08:20

mumon ..what is the nasal spray called do you know ?
going to do similar today seen green box orange writing on it, big dose of multi vit efavesant (sorry spelling ) to help boost immunity in boots ..will get some for lids to along with antibac hand wash for kids to take to school i think ...

scary times i think ....

fishie · 14/07/2009 08:27

here's the algorithm i am not sure it is down to resources, can't see what good tamiflu would have done for ds.

a vaccine on the other hand would have been v handy.

stressed2007 · 14/07/2009 08:32

Is Tamiflu what is being given or is a more specific vac being given for SF?

mumonthenet · 14/07/2009 08:38

1walot, to be honest I have never bought one of these - only heard about them. I have no idea if they are effective but I know people who have used them for a flight on the basis that a plane is a small enclosed space with no fresh air and millions of microbes whizzing about! Therefore may be worth a try in shhhh's case.

You could google nasal barrier spray.

magso · 14/07/2009 11:10

Vicks do a first defence nasal spray (over 12s) BUT it is not as far as I can tell a barrier spray. It seems to work ( on me at least) by making you snease violently! I guess this gets rid of bugs trying to invade the nose. I used one once and failed to read the instructions fully- it warns against breathing the stuff in too deeply (I think only a gentle sniff is required)! I failed to read this warning and it nearly knocked me out !!

shhhh · 14/07/2009 11:49

magso, the 1st defence one is meant to be good....Iworry..thats the one we have been recommended (in fact the woman from the childrens private immunisation clinic sggested it, she is due to go away this week and is taking tamiflu supplies and using the first defence on flight..) BUT I have just bought some from boots and as magso said, its only for kids over 12 (dd 4 and ds 2) so I have also bought the first defence hand cleaner thingy...

My aim to allow kids to use it on flight etc and also to use it on dd before preschool (2 days a week), obviously she won't use it during the day BUT we are hoping that at least she has "something"..

still not decided about buying tamiflu or about travelling. Our views atm are not to risk it BUT then this year has been hard on us all as a family, dh working away since sept and we wanted the sun...maybe later on in the year or next year thouhg..??!

Mumonthenet..hijack away . Esp if it gets me advice and help. xx

Hi Shh
I am being treated with tamiflu & have a disabled ds2 with other health conditions.
Our GP will not recommend giving him tamiflu until he shows symptom of the illness due to increase side effects in children.

We waited a few yrs for ds2's immune systom to strengthen before we travelled abroad, as like your ds he picked up every bug going & ended up in hospitla with infections, just didn't want to risk it overseas.
We have had successfull holidays abroad over the last couple of yrs (he is 6 now)

shhhh · 14/07/2009 12:03

Thanks anon .

I think if we do buy ourselves tamiflu then dispite what recommended by the clinic we would use at 1st signs....

Thing is with hols, we end up having a lovely time. Just think its the flight that makes him ill...typical !

You never know he may surprise you & be a little tougher now.
Its good to ahve the reassurance of the tamiflu with you, enjoy your hols whatever you decide.

shhhh · 14/07/2009 12:43

Yeah, im hoping that is the case if we decide to go abroard..

Decisions eh...noone tells you all this before you have lo's..You think the 9month pregnancy is a worry..then they arrive and its a life time of worry .

Yeah, I think if we had the tamiflu at least it would give us that reasurrance..
