noddyholder · 13/07/2009 20:34

lulu2 I am in the same situation nightmare.Had one nurse tell me to keep ds home then GP said no point unless I keep him in for the rest of the summer!

Sidge · 13/07/2009 20:44

I'm an NHS worker. We had our Swine Flu Pandemic training today! (better late than never eh?)

If you plan to stay in then you'd better stock up for a long while as you'd need to stay in until around next March or so to avoid it. Obviously avoid people that have confirmed swine flu, and don't go out if you yourself are ill but it will be difficult to avoid it completely. We were told today that they are predicting a 60-85% hit rate for the whole population, so it's more a case of when you get it, not if.

Luckily for most of us it will be mild and the benefit is that it's a short and self-limiting illness. For those at risk then seek medical help as soon as you have symptoms - fever, respiratory and/or gastrointestinal symptoms.

imaynotbeperfectbutimokmummy · 13/07/2009 20:51

i have been ill all weekend, horible aches and pains(I hurt everywhere, never felt like that before), no real temp to speak of but felt very feverish, i threatened a sore throat but didn't get it. terrible upset tum though, but no puking. DD had it,lasted two days, bounced back - DP now feeling poorly - would it be pathetic to hope that we might have had it now?

whomovedmychocolate · 13/07/2009 20:55

HPA latest

Phoenix4725 · 13/07/2009 21:06

well ds has had it swabbed conirmed and hospitlied for 10 days but was told to send my other dc to school as it be unauthorised absence and be reported to eduacation welfare.

and as a family yes we will be on priorty list for vacine due to astham etc mind most at risk dd she wont be having as he rimmmune system stops her making antibodies.but am refusing to panic either way flu be ot swine or not is dangerous nd thousands do die from it and yep she shospitlised at least once year with flu

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/07/2009 21:09

Sidge - are they really expecting such a huge hit rate? Good grief. Thats much higher than previous pandemics isn't it? Thank goodness the cfr rate is relatively low in comparison.

aiti72 · 13/07/2009 21:13

I just told DP I'm seriously thinking about taking our DDs (1 and 4) away from ill London to grandparents in Lapland where I could stay with them until they are vaccinated. Hate to think about leaving DP, but he seems to think it's the best thing we could do.

Sidge · 13/07/2009 21:24

OYBBK - that's what we were told today. Where that info came from I'm not sure, it was a bit of a whirlwind training session from an infection control view rather than a virology view and not all points were referenced etc.

Should we ever panic?

I trained as a climber for 9 years. Panic and fear are normal and you accept them as such, but use it positively, or your career was going to be short and was most definitely going to end in grave injury or fatality.

'Now there is always something to do, even in the worst of situations, if you only keep your wits about you.' - John Long

All of my children fell ill with swine flu, one by one, the last on the same day I fell ill myself.

Panic will not help you and never will.

I have PND and all manner of anxiety. I can't tell you how this ratcheted up my anxiety.

But what is the point in panic? Even when the girl I gave everything for just the idea of fell ill?

Cherish every day. Live every day to the fullest and be as sensible as you can.

The rest has to take care of itself.

I remember a cancer-sufferer, who was also a journo say, 'No one has their whole life ahead of them. What we all have is the rest of our lives to live and honor by living to the best we can.'

If these are the last few months I have with my children, then I don't want them to be full of anxiety and worry. I want them to be full of magic and shine and spark and glow.

So go there.

daftpunk · 13/07/2009 22:20

expat...are you ill?

TDiddy · 13/07/2009 22:25

All 3DCs are asthmatic. DC6 just taken out of bed to hospital by DW. She had a hint of illness over the weekend so we kept her at home all weekend and kept her from school today but really didn't think much of it but symptoms a very good match. read up about it and calloed NHS direct and they wanted her at hospital straight away apptmt booked for 20mins from time of call. So all efficient so far.

Britain is meant to be relatively well prepared (vaccines etc.) so we shouldn't panic. Think we will all be exposed so most important thing is to stay healthy: rest, exercise, food no stress.

expatinscotland · 13/07/2009 22:26

No, daftpunk. We were when we had swine flu.

We're not now.

TDiddy · 13/07/2009 22:26

Sorry, I just dived in without reading the entire thread. Expat- I hope that you are well? Also all others on the thread?

TDiddy · 13/07/2009 22:28

Expat- good to hear that you recovered and are well. I heard Justine from MN on Radio4 talking about MNers keeping swinflu parties. Was that you expat?

daftpunk · 13/07/2009 22:28

sorry expat..it was when you said... if these are the last few months i have....

glad you're ok.

Iworryalot · 13/07/2009 22:29

What were your symptoms expat ?

expatinscotland · 13/07/2009 22:31

It's an entirely different story if you are immuno-supressed or compromised or have an underlying health condition.

It's why we declined Tamiflu even though it was offered at the time because it was importent to us that it only be used for people like this and that we do our best to protect the vulnerable.

TDiddy · 13/07/2009 22:31

daftpunk · 13/07/2009 22:35

Our symptoms varied. DD1 fell ill first and was hardest hit.

But for DH and DD2, both were like a bad cold with a bit of diarrhea for DD2, yet both were confirmed cases.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 13/07/2009 22:56

the thing is, I had all those symptoms, but I dont know if it was swine flu or just another bug. DD was also sick. DH had the same symptoms, as did my mum and dad.

TDiddy · 14/07/2009 01:39

daft- the swine prefix is part of the scare, isn't it. Keep you little one in good condition, prompt bed time and all of that in order to build up resistance? best wishes
