My best friend read it and stopped smoking. I bought the book and got half way and then was moving house, so figured I should wait to finish it off. that was a month ago and I still havint picked it back up. I seem to be reluctant to start reading it, cos that would mean that when I finish it I will have to stop smoking, its the strangest feeling. I want to stop but I dont IFSWIM. I could do with some help here too please

GIvePeasAChance · 10/07/2009 16:38

cafelatte - that is exactly what the book does - take away that stupid irrational fear you have of giving up and dealing with the schizophrenic fight you have about wanting to give up but do not want to give up (because you will never relax/enjoy a meal/have a break/deal with stress etc without a cigarette)

Pick the book up again - give it a go - nothing to lose.

Onlyaphase · 10/07/2009 16:43

I read the book and finished it at 7.45pm on 27 Sept 1999. Haven't smoked a single cigarette since - and I had smoked 20-40 a day for over 10 years.

Love being a non-smoker, get irritated with smokers now.

Has anybody tried the Allen Carr stop smoking day course? I found it on the Tesco points website. We've got enough points to pay for it, but maybe knowing you've shelled out £220 in real money is a big part of it working? (If it does at all.)

I've never smoked and thus have very little sympathy for my husband who's tried repeatedly to give up. He always says it's as hard as giving up heroin (no, he's never tried heroin!) which seems so ridiculous. Then he starts smoking again because he's putting on weight! Because pumping yourself full of poisonous chemicals every day is totally worth it not to have a spare tyre...

He doesn't seem to absorb information properly through text so the book wouldn't work. (I have no idea how that happens, he's not dyslexic.)

I've looked for reviews of the course but found very little online.

overweightnoverdrawn · 11/07/2009 13:05

139 I went to a day course last year . Ask any question .

southeastastra · 11/07/2009 13:22

book didn't work for me, patches with the book helped. 4 months quit now.

motherpi · 11/07/2009 14:27

Love this book

Gave up in August 27th 2002 after smoking 20-30 a day every day and have not had a single drag since.

I'm really not a fan of his style (his diet book was dreadful) but this one struck such a chord it was as though it was written specifically for me.

Good luck MLM - you are this close to being free

l39 · 12/07/2009 08:33

Thanks, overweightnoverdrawn, did the course work? Did you stop smoking and not restart? And had you tried before and ended up smoking again after a few weeks?

Celery · 12/07/2009 08:44

After reading this thread yesterday, I downloaded the mp3 version of the book, listened to it last night, and actually feel like I might not be smoking again!

I am wearing a patch, which may backfire on me, as he totally dismisses them, but the though of smoking a fag right now is not appealing to me.

overweightnoverdrawn · 12/07/2009 12:59

Its been just over a year now . The way they do it is very interesting not judgemental at all . very men friendly / LOL . The good thing is that if at first you dont suceed you can go back again and again . I thought the course was the best money ever spent and I have not had a fag or even a drag of a fag since I gave up . I have done the
Holiday
Night out no drink
night out with drink
Funeral (close )
extremly long journey (2 days )
And been to my favorite place
All with out a fag
I cannot reccomend it highly enough .
If he falls off the wagon he can go back so money not wasted , Please support him its really not his fault . And please please let me know if he succedes .

mamalovesmojitos · 12/07/2009 23:08

so many positive stories on this thread! god, smoking is an awful curse really, it is hard to escape from the clutches.

well, i haven't smoked since the last cigarette allen instructed me to smoke last thursday night/friday morning. i feel like i will never smoke again. i don't feel overly happy or excited, but really relieved. i am a bit suspicious of how 'easy' it was but i'm going to read the book again now without smoking. can't become complacent!

celery, didn't even think of an mp3 version, that's brilliant. best of luck.

cafelattefan, thats the key to the book's success. removes the fear. i think to get the full experience you'll need to read it, but don't be afraid. as he writes himself, if you read it all and want to continue smoking, you have the option to do that. you're not signing your life away be reading it. but do read it carefully, assimilate everything that he says.

139, i too have heard positive things about his course. let us know how your dh gets on.

freedom!!

The feeling of "Hang on, it can't be that easy, surely?" is one I remember And that's the whole point of the book, of course. It's the fear of how hard you think it will be to stop, plus the fear of how are you will ever de-stress (or concentrate, or round off a meal, or enjoy a cup of coffee etc) without a fag in your hand, that keeps you smoking. Once you realise that the fears are totally unfounded and it is that easy to stop smoking... that's the moment you realise that you're free.

Just, whatever you do, don't think "Well, it was so easy to stop last time, I can safely have one or two every now and then" because it doesn't work like that. There are no half-measures. It's like being pregnant - you are or you're not. You're a smoker or you're not. You're not a smoker any more, so all you have to do is remember that fact and continue being a non-smoker

Well done!

Plonketyplonk · 13/07/2009 09:29

I'm stuck with smoking at the moment too. I stopped for 5.5 years, and got addicted to nicotine lozenges. I have now been smoking on and off for a few months and I hate it. It's such a feel-bad thing to do. I have the Allen Carr book, which I have read before, but it's certainly worth another gander.

This time round I need to stop the nicotine replacement too. It seems to be as dangerous as cigarettes in terms of habit-forming.

RubyBlueberry · 14/07/2009 23:28

Totally works, read it 3rd Jan 05, stopped smoking and as a reward I got a BFP 2 months later!!

suzybsue · 14/07/2009 23:39
