Can someone talk to me about Ovarian Cycsts and Ovarian Cancer please? I am sending myself a little insane and tying not to google!

Basically, I have been told I have, very likely, got an ovarian cyst. The doc felt something of a good size on Friday (I currently look about 5 months pg) and I have to go for a scan to confirm on Monday.

Usually, as I understand it, most cysts are pretty harmless and usually painless; sometimes need intervention, sometimes not.

This one has been causing me a lot of pain, making walking difficult, even lying down I was in tears yesterday. Thankfully it eased off a bit today and I could move around although it is back in quite a full on way tonight (not as bad as last night though), I suspect this is partly because we had tickets to blommin Ice Age thing and I had told the dc so I went anyway....

Anyway, the next part of the equation is that my mother had ovarian cancer, she is all clear now although had a hysterectomy and lost both ovaries, she was under 40 and had had it for some time. As I understand it I have a 1 in 40 chance of suffering O.C. before the age of 70, given the family history.

So, what are the chances that this is just a run of the mill cyst that will go down on its own and this is just a temporary blip? Like I said I am trying not to Google but I really want an idea of what the likely outcomes are here! Can anyone talk some sense into me? I am torn between head in the sand, carry on as normal and quivering behind the sofa!

King
I had a monster sized ovarian teratoma removed back in 1987 - so lumpy and entiwned they had to remove ovary and tube as well. I went on to have 4 boys in 7 years and am fighting fit (and still as fat as butter ) all these years later. There is loads of cancer in my family as well so hopefully yours will be as good as mine (())

BodenGroupie · 07/07/2009 09:01

All in one go, KC.

I had a cervical cancer scare (grade 3 CIN from nowhere) when DD2 was a baby so I've always expected something serious to happen. I think maybe it goes with being a mum, too!

Hope you get your appointment through quickly.

bella21 · 07/07/2009 16:29

Thinking of you - are you feeling a bit more chipper now? Hope so. And sorry for being mean but of course I always get to be bad cop (why?????) and I was only trying to divert you, you know that

If you need a giggle try to picture my new pup trying to suckle on my lab's testicles

KingCanuteIAm · 07/07/2009 21:27

Thank you for that image Bella

I am doing ok actually, venting my feelings through the medium of religion and drugs (in a purely MN sense of course)

Thank you for thinking of me - and for wanting to distract me - and for a good slap, I need it once in a while

Just weighing in..... I had a cyst when I was pg with DS (now 6 years ago) and had that removed 4 years ago as it had grown to the size of a grapefruit. This time next week I shall in hospital recovering from a laparotomy to remove an absolute monster cyst from the same ovary. I had this cyst while I was pg with dd (9 months) and the only thing they did was to monitor it, do a blood test to check it was not serious. It didn't cause me any problems at all during pregnancy. The bloody thing continued to grow after dd was born and is now about the size of a 28 week pregnancy. They will biopsy the cyst during the op and also check all of my other lady parts. The consultant has told me that they will endeavour to leave the ovary as I am only 32 and want another dc. I'll let you know how I get on.......

Most cysts that are found during pregnancy are not cause for concern. Don't worry. Everything is in hand, the doctor is aware of the problem and there is nothing more you can do at the moment. Worrying about it will only make you feel worse (says the woman who was so convinced when the second cyst appeared that she had cancer, that she complied her own funeral playlist in her iTunes ).

KingCanuteIAm · 07/07/2009 21:54

Thank you for sharing Marthas, I hope your op next week goes well and the results of the investigations are as you would want!

Isn't it odd how we can so easily be convinced to think the worst and are sure we are behaving totally logaically when we come up with playlists or start checking our proxy parents are all in place

I am always here when you need a slap. KC - you know that

bella21 · 07/07/2009 21:57

x post - I am not even ill and I have a mental playlist: it starts with 'Dancing Queen'

Get well soon everyone

bella21 · 09/07/2009 10:20

Hey Podge

Just wondered how you're doing - any word on an appointment? I'm not bad with a scanner myself, if you wanna have a go?

KingCanuteIAm · 09/07/2009 12:23

No, no word yet
The pain has settled down now so it is just niggling rather than hurting which makes it easier to ignore wait IYSWIM. If I have still heard nothing after the weekend I will pop over to you - infact shall we just cut out the middle man and you can just go straight in with the scalpel?

Ready when you are, hon. Is there going to be much subcutaneous fat to get through first?

KingCanuteIAm · 09/07/2009 13:03

Acres - how are you with a vacumn? Maybe we could go for two birds and one stone?

OP posts:
bella21 · 09/07/2009 16:26

Just what I was thinking

Are you a big girl's blouse who needs anaesthetic? If so, my drug of choice is Jack Daniels but Blondie might let you have a couple of her babychams if we ask nicely

KingCanuteIAm · 09/07/2009 19:41

Nah, tequila is the poison of choice

bella21 · 10/07/2009 13:49

Ha - slut!

M&S do some fab firm control pants, you know.

Just thought I'd throw that in.

KingCanuteIAm · 10/07/2009 17:04

How did you know? Who has been talking?

The M&S pants are too small for me

OP posts:
ColinOnTheOtherSide · 11/07/2009 09:05

KC - it could be worse. You could end up flushed down the loo like me

Can't even begin to tell you the things I saw on my travels

Bella21 · 13/07/2009 19:27

Right -oh. Where are you hiding, huh?

Have had a spondiferously wonderful idea.

Here goes.

Will bet you one whole (500ml!!!!) bottle of my recently bottled elderflower champagne that it is a cyst.

If I am wrong, then not only do you have to face up to a more serious diagnosis, but you owe me lunch.

Deal?

KingCanuteIAm · 13/07/2009 21:34

Ooh, now that is worth coming out of hiding for - sounds like a rather good deal because, if I have to buy you lunch, you have to listen to me sniffle and snuffle all about my woes and I love elderflower champagne

I have no appointment though I am not sure if I should be chasing it up or not - my GP surgery have been known not to send off referals they say they are going to

OP posts:
Bella21 · 13/07/2009 22:31

Cool - everything is cool at mo cos I am comepltely rat arsed on 2 glasses of rose.

Pissed as alarge methaneous emission.

How you doing?

KingCanuteIAm · 14/07/2009 10:25

Well I was asleep

I am doing ok, I seem to have fallen into just not thinking about it until I have to. If it sneaks into my head it is banished with a deal with it when it happens type attitude.

How is your hangover this morning?

OP posts:
Bella21 · 14/07/2009 13:52

Fine & dandy, thanking you. The upside of having a very low alcohol tolerance threshold is that one never gets so inebriated that one has a hangover

They were 2 very small (but chic, Habitat no less) wine glasses.

How's your pup - or shall we go do that over in Pets?

KingCanuteIAm · 14/07/2009 14:06

He is great thanks! Definitly becoming a thug boy now though, he keeps trying to mount a poor tiny little russel/corgi type, she is now scared of him when they used to be best mates. I am not sure how to stop him really as he has started motoring up to other dogs as soon as he sees them

How is your baby?

OP posts:
Bella21 · 14/07/2009 14:34

She's luuverly, thanks, although already challenging top dog (my old bitch), at just 9 weeks . I knew from the outset that the newbie would take top dog slot, just didn't expect her to try quite so soon....

Have you ever tried training discs? Might help with the humping (your dog's that is)

KingCanuteIAm · 14/07/2009 14:41

I use discs yes, they are great for some things IME but I am not quite sure how you could apply them to this? He kind of races off and grabs her with his front paws around her chest, the only way I can see to use the discs is to throw them at the ground in front of him then grab him before he carries on IYSWIM.... I am not sure I am a good enough aim or a fast enough runner

I love that she is already asserting her authority - you do know that probably means you are in for a world of fun later don't you?
