I would like to point out that littlelamb is by no stretch of the imagination a blimp!

littlelamb · 04/07/2009 20:38

Greensleeves · 04/07/2009 20:39

But seriously, I am wayyyyyyyy over what I should be- I was sorting out all my pre pg clothes and could have wept at how beautiful my real clothes are. Am fed up of being 1 year postnatal and still not having lost a pound, and if dd is anything to go by, its the bf that is making me hang onto it that and the cakes
Am in my bed btw. Thank the lord for inventing laptops. I have some major sweats going on. What a stunner I sound

Greensleeves · 04/07/2009 20:41

I know what you mean, I have a big cupboard stuffed with all my "real clothes" and I don't know if I will ever wear them again

and I haven't even got a valid excuse baby

littlelamb · 04/07/2009 20:42

hoochie I met you on my dd's due date I was surely visible from space. (Am not liking Mutual Friend's facebook profile pic either- could she have made me look more moonfaced???)

Not yet. I did hurl into a bush when I ventured out this afternoon. I was not a pretty sight. The make up I put on to make myself look human was sliding down my face, I was dripping with sweat and then I started shaking when we were almost home. I'm surprised noone called social services on me. I can't sit up though. Am lying in bed watching Frasier

littlelamb · 04/07/2009 20:46

Nono, there was a much nicer one she could have picked, but didn't as it emphasised her 'pirate smile'

Sorry to butt in but on a serious note, does anyone know what sorts of health conditions put someone at greater risk?

A friend's DD has recently had a nasty case of pneumonia, age 9, and she is v anxious about her DD catching swine flu and how it will affect her.

lisad123 · 04/07/2009 21:40

ll your welcome to drop into my cc anytime, we have bf support, a team of HV, a midwife and of course meee

shock it people buying anti virals online!! madness, is not a cure, it slows it drop a bit, its only good if taken within 48 hours too. daff sods

Elibean · 04/07/2009 23:09

Am going to take deep breath and admit to panic-buying Tamiflu online at the very beginning, when terrified about dd2's breathing problems and the (short-lived, but true, I think) rumour that Tamiflu was impossible to get hold of in our area even if one had a prescription.

Am half about it, obviously, as was done in panic whilst feeling sleep-deprived and out of control. I wouldn't use it, given that its now accessible for at-risk groups and I'm not 100% sure its genuine.

There, have admitted to being a numpty.

I'm sure I'm not the only one, either.

But all the same, and too, because looking back I can see how scared I was by the memory of my baby not being able to breathe and nearly dying of a viral infection two years ago. A sort of madness, that, I suppose.

lisad123 · 04/07/2009 23:20

hands Elibean her brain back and slaps her around the face

cory · 04/07/2009 23:34

I don't get what your problem is, alisha

The doctor is not telling you your dd has to go back to school while she is still ill. And once she has recovered she will no longer be contagious, any more than if she had had ordinary flu.

People die every year in this country from bog standard ordinary flu. They tend to be exactly the same as the ones that have died from this flu, i.e. people with underlying health problems. And yet during an ordinary flu epidemic people aren't treated in any way before returning to work after they've had flu.

Your responsibility as a mum to keep your dd off school for as long as you think she is still infectious.

pooka · 04/07/2009 23:54

Agree with Cory. You aren't being told to send your contagious daughter back to school. Just that there is little value in taking Tamiflu and for Tamiflu to be prescribed to the rest of the family when the flu is out there and uncontainable now.

Obviously if her condition worsens, or she has secondary infections (i.e. ear infection, or whatever) then that will be treated. But the point of Tamiflu is mostly to limit the impact of flu on the very vulnerable (the list includes people with heart/lung issues for example, people who are immune-suppressed or pregnant as well). A healthy person is unlikely to die of swine flu, or rather, no more likely than if they caught "regular" flu.

Sympathies though - flu is grim. DD had full'blown seasonal flu before christmas and it was horrible for her. Took her an age to get over it properly too. DH, DS and I also got it, but in a much milder form.

SO basically, all you can do is nurse her, help her get better, practice good hand hygiene to try and not get it yourself (or other family members). And keep her off school until she is fully recovered. In the meantime, keep an eye on your other children to see if they get it, and then if they do, just repeat the above.

Elibean · 05/07/2009 10:39

Ah, Lisa, thing is I'd probably do the same again in the same situation - I bumped into a doctor in a cafe here, who had got a colleague to prescribe her some Tamiflu: she couldn't fill the prescription. Thats what set off my panic, that and a week of dd2 in HDU at 4 weeks old because of a virus and 'underlying health problems'.

I'll take the brain, thanks, but politely decline the slap

Alisha, I'm sorry your dd is so unwell...like Pooka, I nursed dd1 with seasonal flu back in November and it was worrying for me, horrid for her. Its also been confusing having so many mixed messages from the media about swine flu - it sounds as though you were expecting what was on offer a week or so ago, and had a shock when it wasn't that way any more. The GPs have been in much the same boat, as someone pointed out - its a confusing time for all.

I would wait a week from onset of symptoms, more if she's too unwell obviously, before sending her back to school. And buy a bag full of hand wash/First Defence stuff for your other LOs!

aaaggghhhh · 06/07/2009 09:54

what are symptoms of sf?

imbored · 06/07/2009 17:12

namechange- my daughter is now taking tamiflu off my family doctor.
