Why am I so permanently tired? Is this normal?

I am just so exhausted all the time. Sleeping for about 11 hours a night but still can hardly keep my eyes open during the day. Sleep most afternoons for an hour or so.

Can't read a book because my eyes are so tired then fall asleep.

Yawning constantly, so much so that my chest hurts. When not yawning I keep trying to take deep breaths. It's like I can't get enough oxygen.

Is this normal? If not, what could be causing it? Checked inside my eyelids and they are pinkish so don't think I am anemic. Help! It's driving me daft!

CheeseCheese · 04/07/2009 17:57

ooh you arent HOT at night are you ( i mean more htan normal - sweaty at all)

CheeseCheese · 04/07/2009 17:57

oh no kids not tiny

hercules1 · 04/07/2009 17:59

Eyelids are not an accurate way to tell if anaemic. Get a blood test for full blood count and iron storage levels.

gibbberish · 04/07/2009 18:01

No tiny kids. 4 dds - 15, 14, 9 and 8.

Don't think I am more hot than usual cheese, well except for the last few nights because of this humid weather.

Hercules, didn't know that. Will go for blood test.

pregnant?!

dontlikeitatall · 04/07/2009 18:02

Get your thyroid tested too.

CheeseCheese · 04/07/2009 18:02

I recky gladnular fever...

jetcat32 · 04/07/2009 18:03

do you snore? I used to sleep all night, and then fall asleep during the day as well - I was so tired i went to my GP and was eventually diagnosed with sleep apnea, so wasnt actually getting good night's sleep!

Think blood test is good idea, as could be thyroid related

gibbberish · 04/07/2009 18:04

lol definitely NOT pregnant!

cheesy don't think it is 'gladnular fever'

Did wonder about underactive thyroid. That would be great - would perhaps explain my 'few' extra pounds!

OP posts:
gibbberish · 04/07/2009 18:06

OFCOURSE I don't snore

Well, dh insists I do but I've never heard myself so don't believe it for a minute

Thanks for all your replies btw.

Also if you are sleeping 11 hours a night, that could be the course, try cutting it down to 9 hours and see if you feel any better after a week or so.

hercules1 · 04/07/2009 18:08

I really do think you sound anaemic.

gibbberish · 04/07/2009 18:11

Will try that dont. It's certainly not helping me feel more awake!

Herc, I do think that that could be the cause. Just glad that you think there might be something behind it and I am not just lazy slob!

I felt just like you are descibing. I ended up having an under active thyroid gland.

Kayzr · 05/07/2009 09:49

I have the same symptoms as you. GP reckons it is normal family tiredness. He did the eyelid check and said I am not anaemic. But I pestered him and I am having a fasting blood test for diabetes and blood tests for anaemia and thyroid problems.

gibbberish · 05/07/2009 13:13

Seems like an underactive thyroid is quite common!

kayzr, that's good that you are getting tests done.
