Baby fallen off sofa

Sorry if this has already been covered, and no, I wasn't on mumsnet, I was sitting right next to him but I'm feeling dizzy after a virus and he just crawled off the arm before I knew it ......
He's nearly 12 months old and landed on his forehead. He has a red patch, was a bit vomity at first, but he has a bug, so that's clouded the issue. He went pale for a few minutes but now seems normal.
Can anyone remember the signs I should be looking out for?

Think they are some of the signs you look for to be honest - but i'm no expert. Call NHS driect on 0845 464748, they are excellent. Try not to worry, it happens to us all from time to time...

Hope everythings okay...

musica · 06/05/2003 12:21

My ds somersaulted off the bed - I was told to look out for vomiting, going pale, looking confused - e.g. eyes not focussing. I would take him along to the GP or phone NHS direct just to put your mind at rest. He'll probably be absolutely fine, but I know how horrible it is, worrying, and wondering if they're ok.

WideWebWitch · 06/05/2003 12:27

Droile, agree, call NHS direct if you're worried but you should be looking for unusual drowsiness, vomiting, not focussing IIRC. I remember the feeling, horrible isn't it? They are quite tough though and I'm sure he'll be fine esp since presumably it was onto carpet?

griffy · 06/05/2003 12:32

I agree with the others - you've got to set your mind at rest. TBH, though, this happened to me and NHS Direct advised taking him to casualty straight away without the signs you've mentioned (I think they err on the side of caution), so I'd advise cutting out the middle man and getting him checked over.

Matching pupils, both dilating and contracting properly is a good sign.

(One of mine fell off the kitchen table face first onto the concrete floor in his bouncy chair. He was OK!) (Do I qualify for bad mother award???)

Have you rung your GP? You might be able to pop and see him/her rather than trailing to A & E and possibly waiting for hours? (Just to set your mind at rest.)

Clarinet60 · 06/05/2003 13:24

Thanks all. The fact that he was drowsy and sickly before it happened is a real b*gger.
I'll phone the GP and NHS direct. No lump has come up, which is odd. It was onto coir matting, so quite hard, but still similar to carpet.

Hope he's OK Droile, let us know how you get on.

Yes Jahn you're getting there for bad mother of the year award. o)

bossykate · 06/05/2003 13:40

good advice here already, droile, hope he is fine - i think my one must be indestructible the number of falls etc he has had!

Marina · 06/05/2003 13:41

Forehead's the hardest part of a small child's head and the fact that he fell onto coir matting will help, Droile. Given that he was not 100% before his little dive, I'd get him checked over by the GP, but I am sure he is OK. Wish I was at home - I still have my souvenir "Head trauma in small children" free gift from the last time we were in Casualty with such an incident. Hope he and you are fully recovered soon.

janh · 06/05/2003 14:00

Oh, marina, we had another "head trauma with small child" with DS1 (the bouncy chair faller) when he was 4 - he had cut his head open falling against DH's desk in his office, we had to wait ages at the HC to get it stitched and it subsequently became infected so his forehead swelled up like Frankenstein's monster...scary!

Anyway while we were waiting in A & E he found a fluffy pink flamingo in the toy basket and insisted on taking it home (felt obliged to smuggle it out!) and we still have it, 10 years later, I think when he gets married it will go with him!

Droile - I can't beleive there's a single mumsnetter whose baby hasn't fallen off the bed/sofa etc at least once - my DS, aged 8 months, fell off the bed just a month after major surgery on his skull ....... bad mother alert - as he seemed cheerful enough I didn't even think of phoning NHS direct - well, it was Christmas Day and I was enjoying the festivities!!!

smartie · 06/05/2003 18:18

I've been there too, don't wear the t shirt proudly though! All 3 have had bad falls at least once each.
ds came downstairs at 9 mnths - not a bruise in sight.
dd1 fell off a kitchen worksurface, hip height, at 4 mnths - her head ballooned.
dd2 came down the stairs at 2yrs, was sick twice and admitted to hospital for the night, purely precautionary.
All 3 are fine and quite obviously didn't kill off too many brain cells!
Always best to play safe and spend a naff day in the docs surgry/a&e dept though.
Hope your ds is fine now Droile.

gingernut · 06/05/2003 19:28

Hi Droile,

Sorry don't have time to write much and haven't read all the posts so apologies if I say something that's already been said. My ds fell from a changing station at the swimming pool onto a tiled floor, apparently onto his head. I was told to keep an eye out for sickness and him falling into a deep sleep where he couldn't be roused (e.g. just poke him every now and again and see if he responds).

Hope he's OK. My ds was - he obiously managed to break his fall somehow.

Demented · 06/05/2003 20:38

Hope your DS2 is OK Droile. I managed to drop DS1 when he was just little too we took him to casualty and found them very understanding, it gave us peace of mind just to have him checked.

doormat · 06/05/2003 20:40

Droile how is the little fella, is he o.k.

willow2 · 06/05/2003 21:37

Hey droile - how are things?

gingernut · 07/05/2003 09:00

Droile, how is your ds? And how are you - hope you're getting over the virus.

Clarinet60 · 07/05/2003 10:41

Hi, thanks for all your concern & advice.
As Griffy and SB34 said, NHS Direct advised casualty for any head injury under 1 year old. They did give me advice on what to watch out for - all the stuff you lot have already told me, thanks, esp. fluid leaking from nose or ears, floppiness, drowsiness. He seemed fine yesterday and kept waking every 3 hours throughout the night, so I could see he was still fine. The GP has no appointments for a few days unless it's an emergency, so after asking around all over the place, we've decided to just keep an eye on him.
Thanks everyone. (I feel a bit better today thanks, just a bit woozy).
