What is wrong with my knees?

They really hurt, mostly going up and down the stairs. I am thinking arthritis but I feel too young - even though I know children can have it.

Any thoughts?

I feel so ollllllllllllllllllllld.

Are they very swollen or is it just sore?

Could be several causes from diet to knee cap roughness (medical term escapes me) to arthritis. So don't feel old just yet. I have both of first two and know the pain that is possible

One trick i tried is a cold compress eg cold cloth. i also swear by witch hazel (soak bandage in cold water, ring out, apply liberal witch hazel) which acts as an anti-inflam if you can't have things like ibuprofen and NSAIs. Put feet higher then hips when resting as it helps to drain any excess fluid from joints. It is persists i would recommend a trip to docs as a simple blood test will confirm or deny arthritis.

good luck

Not swollen, just sore when going up and down the stairs and sometimes my calves reaklly ache when walking round the corner.

They are worse today. Going down the park stairs I had to hold on to the hand rail to support me as I went down.

I vaguely remember that my nana had knee trouble but that was when she was in her 70's.

DidEinsteinsMum · 18/06/2009 11:17

Are your muscles tight in your legs?

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 18/06/2009 11:21

I don't think so. But going down stairs is still ow ow ow for me.

DidEinsteinsMum · 18/06/2009 11:27

I would mention it to dr. It could be so many things. I often live in support bandages, i have reduce bouts of pain with excluding dairy and coke. I would stick with the anti imflams and cold compress with elevation as possible.

Any increase in weight can push problem knees over the edge (as little as a couple of lbs can do it)

Overmydeadbody · 18/06/2009 11:33

do you do a lot of running or other high impact sport?

My knees are fucked. But I know it's the running that does it.

nigglewiggle · 18/06/2009 11:36

Have you recently had a baby? After the birth of DD1 I had very sore knees. I think it was to do with my pelvis being stretched all over the place and the knees were taking the strain. It gradually got better over time.

ThePhantomPlopper · 18/06/2009 11:44

My Mum had this from a very young age, she's started talking certain vits and they rarely hurt now. Going down the stairs was so bad at times she had to go down on her bum.

I'll phone her later and get the names of them if you want?

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 18/06/2009 12:36

I have started doing an exercise dvd, baby is 4 and I am 2 stone over weight.

All my own fault.

DidEinsteinsMum · 18/06/2009 12:41

But it will get better....

i'd rather that then the long term pain issues i had since 10yo in my knees. I guess the exercise dvd must be working

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 18/06/2009 13:00

I hope so

Bibithree · 18/06/2009 13:04

Do you have a grinding sensation and noise when you use your knees? Is it mostly when taking impact like going downhill or downstairs?
I have chondromalacia patella (sp?) which causes me a lot of pain, ibuprofen and avaoiding impact is working for me for now.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 18/06/2009 14:39

No clicking or any noise just a jarring pain.

I am trying to lose weight so hopefully I will be able too and it will help.

GeckoLovingHornedThing · 18/06/2009 14:41

I have that bibithree, tis a pain in the arse (well the knee) isn't it

DidEinsteinsMum · 18/06/2009 18:40

Ahh that the technical name for it Thanks Bibithree! I agree that it is a pain in the a bit that you can take ibuprofen would love that option far less messy
