help -- I'm worried

I've just spent an hour on the internet trying to find out if I should be alarmed about my daughter (she's almost 3), who coughed up masses of yellow phlegm last night. I thought at first that she had vomited but then I realised that it was mucus. She doesn't seem to have any other symptoms, except that she seems especially tired. Anyone know anything??

I'm not scientific, but I think mucus is the body's production of white cells which fight infections, so excess mucus is a sign that your dd is fighting an infection, or maybe an allergen. The tiredness again is probably because her energy is taken up fighting the infection; it's a good sign because that's what the body should be doing, but of course a worrying sign, because you don't know what the infection is. It may just be a wait and see how it develops, but I wouldn't worry too much if she otherwise seems OK. Hope you get more help than this, but best wishes anyway

Thank you for answering! It's such a relief to have some feedback, other than dh's "you're worrying over nothing." He's probably right but it was a bit of a shock as dd hasn't been ill recently. She does get frequent coughs and gastroenteritis (sp?). Also has an appallingly bad appetite.

alex may be worth trying a cranial osteopath. DS2 is prone to mucus and they've got rid of it twice now (after he's been struggling for a while) Try and get a recommendation- or look at the Sutherland society (google should give you their website).

It sounds like she's finally managed to clear a build from previous colds/coughs.

Do her glands feel swollen under her jaw bone?? That'll clarify that her body is still fighting an infection. To test if they are sore put your finger on her chest just below her neck and ask her to touch her chin on your finger. Then you can ask her if anything was sore. She 'may' tell you.
