"Growning Pains ??" - DD aged 8.

My DD has complained for the past couple of days of sharp pains in her muscles and joints. Primarily in her legs and arms.
Her appetite hasn't altered noticably; though I did notice that she was storing a bit more body fat too.
She has had a couple of headaches and a slight rise in temerature.
I was thinking that perhaps this was a growth spurt ( or hormone spurt ) as quite a lot happens around this age ( 8 years ) - or so I have been told.
DO any of you have experience in this area ? Thanks

Hi, crystaltips. Could she maybe have a virus? None of my kids had growing pains but a friend's did and their pain was actually in the bones - eg shins. Aching in muscles and joints and a temperature sounds fluey - have you tried giving her Calpol?

crystaltips · 01/05/2003 12:52

Calpol - by the bucketful!! WHich seems to work - but I was wondering if there was more to it ?

I don't know....! I don't think GPs generally believe in growing pains but it might be worth getting her checked out anyway for your peace of mind? (Has she got swollen glands?)

(Also, from what I remember of what my friend used to say about her kids, it mostly used to come at night, nothing helped it and it used to make them cry with pain. But I can imagine all children aren't the same.)

My dd (now 9) has been getting what we think are 'growing pains' for about 2 years. As janh said, the pain was in the bones and always happened at bedtime. She would cry with the pain of it but never wanted medicine so all we could do was cuddle her and tuck her up. Hope that helps.

Sounding very familiar - as this has all been happening at nighttime ( now you come to mention it ! )

I suffered from "growing pains" as a kid - so I can assure you they are real. It was always in my legs (particularly shins, as I recall,) and really quite painful - certainly enough to keep me awake. Mum used to massage my legs, and give me pain-killers if it was bad.

I've no idea if the pains were really caused by growing, but I experienced them over a long period of time (years) not just for an isolated growth-spurt. From something I've read recently it's linked to restless legs syndrome (rls) which runs in the family, and which I experienced in pregnancy.

Yes, I had growing pains for years too. Supposed to be linked with hyper flexible joints (which I have, a bit, and my daughter had identified - in her - when she was born). And my mum had restless legs and I've started with them!!

But I do remember the doctor's not giving anything for them and some saying growing doesn't hurt. So I think some pain killers must be the only solution and Deep Heat, or similar, on the legs.
