My friend has lost 9lbs in a month - also says that she's very aware of her fat intake 'cos of the nasty side efects - so maybe that is half the reason for the weight loss. She's really happy with it so far.

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 04/06/2009 20:11

"They have both lost half a stone each in a month by taking it with normal meals.

They say that the reason it has worked for them is that it makes them more aware of what they are eating rather than just the effect of 25% of the fat not being processed in the body. "

"My friend has lost 9lbs in a month"

The recommended weight loss per week on a diet is 1-2lbs so basically your friends have lost no more than they would if they went on a sensible food diet, which it sounds like they have done because they are watching what they eat. It's basically a threat - eat sensible or your arse will leak.

summer111 · 04/06/2009 20:29

Absoluelty Libra, my friend is in total agreement with this. She suffers from depression so at times finds it hard to motivate herself and can comfort eat. Her confidence is really soaring as a result of her success to date... I'm also really pleased that it's a sensible weight loss rather than anything too drastic.

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 04/06/2009 20:33

Fair enough but it's a crutch, what happens when you take it away? Will they have re-eduated their food habits enough to maintain the new weight or will they just binge again. I would always say that someone who comforts eats needs to find the reason and deal with that to maintain weight loss.

Malkuth · 04/06/2009 20:43

Isn't it orlistat which is a prescription drug? If so, don't buy it, get it from the doctor. And if they won't prescribe it you probably shouldn't take it!

I was offered it by the GP but decided that I didn't want to keep each meal at under 30% fat as I would rather eat the odd bit of cheese, chips etc but then try to avoid fat for the rest of that day. (And have managed to lose 2.5 stone in 5 months.) In the States Lays low-fat crisps contained olestra, which is similar, and on the back of each pack it stated that eating them might cause anal leakage!

sorry if I am about to bring down the tone of this thread

I don't know if it was specifically this pill but I was talking to my DDs consultant this week about these new type of diet pills.

My DD has cystic fibrosis (CF), an incurable life threatening genetic condition. One of the symptons of CF is that thick mucous clogs up her pancreas meaning that she is not able to produce enzymes to break down and absorb fats and proteins. Left untreated she will suffer from bloating, painful stomach cramps, large (some might say explosive) foul smelling poos several times a day often coated with a layer of greasy fat.

In order to combat these problems and allow her body to absorb the necessary goodness from food she has to take artificial enzymes before she eats anything. Whilst they go some way to alleviate the problems they are not perfect and we still have the odd accident and stomach ache to deal with

basically her consultant was saying that these dieting pills do the opposite to my DDs artificial enzymes, ie stop the body breaking down and absorbing fats. So if too much fat is eaten then the symptons described above, and as you all so delicately raise your hands in horror to, will occur.

I realise that people desperate to lose weight will try what they can to help them shift the extra pounds but it is beyond me why someone would bring upon themselves such unpleasant symptoms as those that are faced by sufferers of CF every waking day.

As I say, sorry if I have changed the mood of the thread but I just wanted to put across a different point of view

I'm on Xenical?orlistat, which is the same as Alli, but a stronger and on prescription.

I have lost 1 stone in 4 weeks and 2 days, but I could have lost more, I (unfortuately ) have seen it as a liscence to feed my face I have had.

2 mcDonalds breakfasts,
big mac meal
fish a chips
3 Indian takeaways.
2 chinese takeaways
eat as much as you like chinese buffet 3 plates.
Bottles of wine.

I have still lost 14lb. I couldn't have done that if I weren't taking the pills.
I am reining it in though as I could have lost more and the doctor is monitoring my weight now, so I have to lose 1.5 stones in a month or he's taking them off me. weight loss on Xenical is expected to be around 5lb a week, on Alli it's 3lbs + a week.

I have serious food issues I need to address. It is getting better.

I have leaked 3 times, that's through farting, it comes, no warning, but thankfully I was at home each time.

You DO NOT shat yourself UNLESS you eat higher fat foods. When you take the pill it stops the body from absorbing the fat, it extracts the fat from the food and 'expels' it through the anus, so, the higher in fat , the more fat there is to 'expel' eat a low fat diet and the weight falls off.

My friend is on Alli and she's lost more weight , she's doing it correctly, she's lost 16 lb in 4 weeks and dropped a dress size.

Ah Libra, if only mental health recovery was that easy...but she's getting the proper professional help that you are referring to.

isheisnthe · 06/06/2009 15:58

well, they have arrived and I have started taking them this morning.

I am really looking at the fat content of things so I think like someone else said, the threat of what could happen if i cheat seems to be enough!

I weighed myself today, 10st 9 1/2 lbs - and I will weigh in next saturday to let you know if its working.

Fingers crossed.

ellymay - sorry your daughter suffers like that, I dont really know what to say other than that x

Day three weigh in - 10st 7lbs! And none of the treatment related issues (ie crapping myself!) to be heard of - in fact as yet no issues at all - fingers crossed that carries on!

Good news re the lack of bad side effects. Have your thread on watch so keep us up to date and good luck.

Kafka · 11/06/2009 22:02

Which is best to go for the GP route or the over the counter? I am three stone overweight, is it hard to persuade the GP to prescribe it?

brettgirl2 · 12/06/2009 12:58

I was considering trying to persuade the boots shop assistant that my BMI was more than 28 as I have some baby weight to shift. Until I noticed the price when I decided to continue with the careful eating regime!
