caroline18 · 30/04/2003 12:14

i have a 9 month old girl and discovered she has 2 creases on one leg and 1 crease on the other leg.
I just want to here some advice, is this a serious problem as i have taken her to see our doctor and he said it was very visible and has advised us that he will send her for an ultrascan.
i am very worried.

Caroline

Asymmetrical skin creases usually don't signify a problem, but on rare occasions can be a sign of a dislocated hip. The ultrasound scan will look at your daughter's hips and check that they are alright.

Caroline, my dd had this condition and it can be an indicator of a dislocated hip. It's an indicator only, it doesn't mean your dd does have this condition (my dd was cleared - she had no problem at all!) and your Dr is doing the right thing by having your DD checked out. If it is a hip problem, then it can be dealt with - maybe someone else on Mumsnet has experience of it, or you could do an internet search. Best wishes.

MY DD had this and it did indicate a dislocated left hip-at least your dd is only 9 months old some children get missed and if it is a dislocated hip and left untilthe child is older then a more complex op is involved.my dd had her closed reduction op aged 4.5 months(this involves manipulating the hip back into the socket and normally the child only has a slight nick in the groin to loosen the muscles-my dd has a small nick in her groin but it's less than half a centimetre long and can not be seen unless you specifically look for it.the op is done under a general anaesthetic and then they are put in plastercast. Before my dd had this op she was put in a pavlic harness but this was not successful hence the op.After nearly a year of continous treatment with in patient visits as well as out the hip is normally back to normal and check ups are all thats required-funny you've posted today as tomorrow my dd has her 6 month check up.....where in the uk are you??
my best bit of advice would be don't wait too long for your scan and referral to orthopedics...contact me for more advice if you need it(hopefully you won't but i wished i had known someone who had been through the treatment)
lots of love to you both xxxx

Caroline18, just to say my dd (is this more common in girls, anyone know...?) also had 2 creases on one leg & 1 on the other - picked up at 8-month check, I never noticed it. Saw paediatrician and all was fine. She still has uneven creases (but not so obvious now she is moving about and is less chubby.)
Let us know how you get on. x

chatee · 30/04/2003 21:12

yes it is more common in girls, particuarly first born and breech babies

Dinny · 30/04/2003 21:19

Chatee, do you know why more common in girls? Glad your dd has had the all clear now.

chatee · 30/04/2003 21:32

no but club feet are more common in boys-we have our orthopedic review tomorrow so i'll ask

Tissy · 30/04/2003 21:33

Dislocated hip is more common in girls (no-one knows why). The risk factors are breech presentation, first degree relative (i.e. sister or mother had a dislocated hip)and having another congenital abnormality such as a club foot. Many babies with dislocated hip unfortunately have no risk factors, and so are not screened at birth.

Uneven skin creases are seen equally in boys and girls and usually are nothing to worry about

Thank you all very much for all your advice as I have been very worried the last couple of days.
I am waiting for the hospital appointment.

just to continue with the reassurances, my son at 9mths had to go and have x ray because creases didn't align, he's absolutly fine, i think NHS has to be so carefull these days, that some babies with dislocated hips get missed in devolopmental checks.

Claireandrich · 01/05/2003 20:32

DD's leg creases are assymetrical. They were checked at her 6 month checkup, referred to a doctor. He look at her and checked her over and he said she was fine. So, although it can indicate hip problems it isn't always the case.

caroline18 · 22/05/2003 10:15

just wanted to know if it is late for my baby to be sitting up on her own unsupported she is crawling at the moment at 9 months.

caroline18
any news on your dd yet??
how's it going...let us know as I've been thinking about you

naughtynoonoo · 18/06/2003 22:59

Health Visitor picked this up with my dd when she went for her 9 month check, she had to go to the doctor, who sent her for an x-ray, all was ok, then when she started to walk and hospital wanted to see her again, and then last month she had an x-ray, again all was ok. I think they are keeping there eye on it and want to see her again in a year, better safe than sorry. Hope all goes well for you.
