tummy pain after eating, what could it be?

for quite a while now i have been suffering from tummy ache after eating, so bad that my tummy swells up and is really uncomfortable for a few hours.

i thought it was bread or cooked cheese so don't have that much but i'm still getting it.

dh is v worried and wants me to see the doctor but i don't really know where to start explaining.

can you quiz me to try and hone down my symptoms?

TIA

Does it happen after EVERY meal?

What are your stools like?

Do you get a lot of wind?

Do you chew gum?

Do you drink a lot of coffee?

Do you drink enough water?

popmum · 30/05/2009 14:05

could be gall stones? i had it for years and finally went to docs, had scan, had it removed. def see doc dont' suffer.

amidaiwish · 31/05/2009 17:25

thanks - it doesn't happen after every meal, i've tried to identify a trigger just can't seem to. it's never in the morning, just mid afternoon and esp at night, never wake up for it even if i've gone to bed with it.

sometimes it feels like trapped wind and i can feel it moving down and out but softly though iykwim

i don't chew gum
drink some coffee, but not loads.
i do drink quite a lot of water, maybe not enough. can be prone to constipation - i need to eat a lot of veg to keep everything moving and know when i don't, nothing serious though, don't take anything for it.

gall stones, hmm, what are the symptoms of those?

gallstones - pain - for me - round the upper tummy area, like a massive elastic band - even in my back. Triggered by eating fatty foods (not always v obvious what's fatty) or spicy foods.
They say 'fair, fat and 40' is when you get them! (also hereditary and linked to pregnancy) more info

JRocks · 31/05/2009 20:29

I've had that linked to irritable bowel syndrome, my mum used to get it with her gallstones. You have my sympathies, hope it gets sorted.

BCNS · 31/05/2009 20:33

I have also had that linked to IBS .. pop to your GP.. don't suffer!

amidaiwish · 31/05/2009 21:17

thanks, what can the GP do though apart from tell me to keep a food diary and look out for triggers?

am nearly 36, fair and just over 9st (5'3") so don't think i qualify for fat, fair and forty not yet anyway...

hmmm. just read that link popmum, maybe it is gallstones.
i had it really badly the other night after having a steak and then one of those mini cornetto icecreams. pretty fatty huh?!

popmum · 31/05/2009 22:19

i wasn't 40, not that fat and not that fair (anymore) either!!
Anyway, get theee to a doc! Please! No point suffering - I thought i had IBS too adn was wrong - it is their job to check you over

a year later and i am still having these problems, have a very sore swollen tummy atm.
have a doctor's appt tomorrow morning, can you help me be clear what my symptoms are and what i want him to do.
last year he had a good prod around and told me to take zantac/pepcid AC as he was sure it was just indigestion.

not sure if i want him to check for gallstones/ulcer etc... or just refer me to a nutritionist. i am sure it is something i'm eating. i have just been on holiday for 2 weeks and noticed a lack of it. back monday night and in agony again.

I get this most with processed carbs - white bread, pasta, pizza, white rice are all triggers. It's as if the carb generates gas unless it's fibre-y enough. Hormone-related, much much worse in early pregnancy, I suspect due to slow transit! Eating only brown bread and rice and smaller portions has helped lots. I do miss French sticks and pizzas though!

amidaiwish · 09/06/2010 19:10

ohexpletive, i thought for ages it was bread. but i ate lots of it on holiday and was fine.

i wonder whether it is just fatty foods, on holiday the meals are light, lots of salads/quiche/fish etc... no red meat.

yesterday i ate an M&S lasagne and rocket at lunch, then M&S breaded fish, oven chips & peas for dinner. was in agony before going to bed last night... so a day with much more/heavier food than usual i suppose. also had 3 glasses of red wine last night, hadn't any red wine on holiday (mostly G&Ts/some white wine)

or is it milk?
usually i have two-three coffees with milk (nespresso capsule 50:50 with boiled milk).
on holiday i had 1-2 coffees in restaurants etc, but these aren't as milky plus probably was UHT milk

the doctor is just going to tell me to do a food diary isn't he?

dh is v worried about this... promised him i would see the doctor again.

I was in my early 20s - don't let the fair, fat and forty thing rule you out.

amidaiwish · 09/06/2010 19:18

what were your gallbladder symptoms Avada? i am beginning to think this is what it could be, though trying not to jump to conclusions.

the weird thing is sometimes i do feel the gas/food moving down and then the pain relieves. am not particularly windy though, and no explosive poos/diarrhoea so really don't think i have IBS.

AvadaKedavra · 10/06/2010 08:51

It was under my right breast and raadiating through to the back/shoulderblade, sometimes travelling across to middle of breasts towards later stages. Hugely swollen abdomen, pain coming in waves not unlike contractions, building up and up and up till I would pass out or throw up and then suddenly it would go away.

I was misdiagnosed as indigestion aged 20 and then later on misdiagnosed IBS. it wasn;t till I moved GP surgery that it was dealt with as it had been discounted purely on my age, depsite the fact my mother had hers out at 30ish and so did my Aunt at similar age.

Worryingly my own DD who is 18 is displaying early symptoms but at least she's got me to push for a proper diagnosis now we know there's research it is hereditary.

amidaiwish · 10/06/2010 12:27

thanks all,
saw the doctor this am who asked me a load of questions and had a good feel around. She doesn't think it is anything "sinister" but has prescribed peppermint oil and also blood test to check a range of things including thyroid and coeliac.

hope you're ok now and your dd too Avada.

Have you ruled out lactose intolerance?

amidaiwish · 11/06/2010 12:18

hmmm hadn't thought of that. will it show up in the blood test? she seems to have booked me in for a thorough screen
