Have got major toothache - what can I do to get through the night?

This evening I've got the worst toothache - I'm in tears
Had the same thing a few months ago in the same place and the dentist put me on antibiotics for what he thought was a tooth root infection. They eased the pain and he said to me if they didn't I should go back and they would take some x-rays to see what the underlying problem could be.
The tooth hasn't been 100% right since and has been very sensitive with hot and cold and uncomfortable when I bite. Being the wimp that I am I haven't gone back and now tonight, serves me right, the major pain has come back.
I've cleaned my teeth with the sensitive teeth paste that I use and have rubbed some onto the area and have also taken paracetamol. I don't have any stronger painkillers here and can't get out tonight to get anything else from the shops.
Does anyone have any other ideas as to what I can do/use to help ease this excruciating pain.
I seriously feel like using the string to tooth and door handle and slam technique right now. Anything would be better than this.

Holding a hot water bottle over it?

Poor you.

Sparkler · 27/05/2009 20:39

HTH

Do you have any Corsodyl mouthwash, it's miraculous it numbs the pain.

I had a tooth abscess over christmas and it was the worst pain of my life.

Do you have a friend or neighbour you could get you some painkillers? Ibuprofen is the best for tooth ache.

Try swirling some warm salty water around your mouth, that might relieve it a bit.

I hope you find something that works, and can get to the dentist first thing in the morning.

southeastastra · 27/05/2009 20:48

hot salt water rinses, poor you

kiltycoldbum · 27/05/2009 20:50

the only way you are not going to feel the pain is if you are asleep. you need to be unconscious. got a sleeping tablet at all? drink some night nurse?

i probably shouldnt suggest getting shedded.

theres is nothing worse than toothache so you have my total sympathy, it drives you properly insane!

snigger · 27/05/2009 20:50

Hot water bottle.

NSAID based painkiller - eg ibuprofen.

Clove oil?

You have every last drop of my sympathy, the longest night of my life was spent nursing toothache in a hotel in the Highlands - get to the dentist in the morning, lassie.

The rubbing an ice cube on your hand tip crops up on a lot of the websites, I've been googling

No no no don't use heat it will make it ten times worse!

Cold would be better, sit upright and taking paracetamol then ibuprofen 2 hours later then paracetamol 2 hours after that.

Phone the out of hours emergency dental service if you are private or on Denplan then you should be seen by an emergency dentist.

MrsMcCluskey · 27/05/2009 20:59

I found biting down on a rolled damp wad of cottn wool helped me.
Along with pain killers, do you have any calpol for the kids? Glug some of that if you have nothing else.
Whisky?

thisisyesterday · 27/05/2009 21:06

sparkler, have you rung your dentist? they usually have an out of hours service of some kind.
if it's really terrible you could go to a&e (just don't expect to get seen that quickly) or better an NHS walk-in place if there is one near you?

pinkmagic1 · 27/05/2009 21:13

You have my sympathy. The worst pain I have ever experienced was from an infected wisdom tooth, worse than child birth!
There must be an out of hours emergency dentist somewhere near you. Get yourself in if you can and demand they take it out if its a back tooth. Failing that clove oil is fab if you have it or if not you can chew on a whole clove. It really does help to dull the pain.

Sparkler · 27/05/2009 22:12

Aw thanks guys. I'm sooooooooooooooo pleased - just raided the cupboard and have found a packet of Ibuprofen hiding in the back. Am now dosed up on those combined with paracetamol. They seem to have kicked in. Although by the infection I had before it will probably kick in again during the night - have a large glass of water ready here and will keep them by the bedside tonight.
Am going to catch some sleep now while I can. Thanks so much again for your kind responses.
kiltycoldbum - am lmao at you suggesting getting "shedded" - have to say it did cross my mind but DH is out tonight and I have two dds to look after.

Yaay!
Get thee to the dentist in the morning!

jasper · 27/05/2009 23:25

I am a dentist
Don't hold a hot water bottle on your face.

hold a a mouthful of hottish water in your mouth - you will need to experiment to get the right temperature.

in some cases COLD water relieves the pain, but it sounds like yours is at a more advanced stage..

But don;y use a hot water bottle on your cheek as infections drains towards the heat source and the outside of your face is NOT where you want it to go

Ibuprofen + paragetamol - good.

jasper · 27/05/2009 23:27

whoops sorry for the typos - I think faster than I type!

MrsASHLEYBanjo · 27/05/2009 23:32

Chew a clove?

Sparkler · 28/05/2009 11:46

Thanks Jasper. I managed ok with the paracetamol and Ibuprofen in the end and the pain stayed away all night, thank goodness. Tooth is still very sensitive, there's no swelling but I know I must be brave and get it sorted.
I've managed to get an appointment this afternoon at the dentist so hopefully it will get sorted.

Good Luck!

snigger · 28/05/2009 17:34

How did it go?

Is all well again?

Sparkler · 30/05/2009 09:53

OMG I've had the most awful time. I went to the dentist. They gave me an anaesthetic and drilled out the filling. Ended up putting some cream (she's a Polish dentist and kept referring to it as "medicine") on it which apparently was to help with the sensitivity, although I still don't know what it's supposed to do. They've stuffed my tooth with a temporary filling and I have to go back in a couple of weeks for x-rays and possible root treatment. Dentist said she wants to do her best to the save the tooth. When I got home as the anaesthetic wore off I was in total agony for about two hours. I was in a right state, crying and just didn't know how to put myself to get rid of the pain. I took Ibuprofen and Paracetamol and it eventually eased. Even today though I still have a dull ache in that tooth.
Am dreading the rest of the treatment now
