I finished the course at 8am yesterday morning.

When can I have a glass of wine? Tonight? Tomorrow? The day after?

My leaflet just said "avoid".

avoid alcohol for 48 hours after you've finished the abs.

lou33 · 27/05/2009 20:06

def avoid for a while, it is the only one that really can make you feel like throwing up if you have it in your system

lou33 · 27/05/2009 20:06

i mean if you have alcohol

McDreamy · 27/05/2009 20:09

Yes def leave it for 48 hours - metronidazole is FOUL if taken with alcohol, foul I tell you - I speak from bitter experience

ThingOne · 27/05/2009 20:33

That's tomorrow, then. Thanks. I have no intention of testing the boundary!

OP posts:
lou33 · 27/05/2009 20:34

oh me too

noddyholder · 27/05/2009 20:34

Oh yes 48 hrs at least it is a horror!

cheshirekitty · 27/05/2009 21:00

Would advise 48 hours (memories, horrible memories coming back to haunt me).

ThingOne · 27/05/2009 21:04

So it's worse than just vomiting? Do I want to know? Or is ignorance and following the rules a better approach?

I've not been well enough to even consider alcohol when I've had it before.

OP posts:
lou33 · 27/05/2009 21:14

just dont drink when they are in your system lol

whomovedmychocolate · 27/05/2009 21:18

It's not just vomiting. You can get hideous rashes. I was stupid enough to take an antihistamine 72 hours after taking these bloody pills - apparently alcohol and antihistamines can have similar effects. Oh how we laughed at the funny colour I turned and the big welts all over my body .

The vomiting and the drippy bottom effect was fetching too

ThingOne · 27/05/2009 21:59

I take a daily prescription anti-histamine. I thought my feeling really shite runny bum was the ABs. I was on another one as well.

Off for some googling, I think!

OP posts:
cheshirekitty · 27/05/2009 22:02

OK, you asked for it:

Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Dizziness
Rash
Fainting

Do not do it. Do not drink the lovely grape water!!!!

Wait until you can appreciate it (and keep it down)!!!

whomovedmychocolate · 27/05/2009 22:08

I had this drug with Cefalexin - not a great combo IME. You get the vomiting, the drippy bum, the tiredness, the nausea and the falling over, and then.....six weeks later when you think it's all done with, I discovered I was suddenly unable to eat certain foods without projectile vomiting and getting the sudden urge of poo! I mean very sudden. Like my body could not handle certain foods. And not unusual foods either.

I yellow carded it as an adverse effect and was told it was prob. the combination of the drugs with the antihistamines and 'who the hell told you to take them together' - umm the senior consultant did actually .

ThingOne · 27/05/2009 22:17

Oh fuck wmmc, I've been on it with cefalexin too, for an infected wound. I said to the GP "so I'm going to feel crap all week, then" and she agreed, although obviously using a slightly more professional word. I'm on cetirizine. What was yours?

My infection seems to have healed, so that's a plus.

I think I'll keep off the alcohol for a few more days. And watch out for any strange reactions in future.

The googling was too bizarre with all my drugs so I gave up.

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 28/05/2009 06:37

Uterine infection post partum.

You must have gone through regular ABs before then? What did you try and for how long?

You know you aren't supposed to take more than two courses of cefalexin OR metrodinazole in six weeks don't you?

One in five users get headache, 2% get skin irritation, dryness, rash, flushing, 4% get dizziness, funny taste in the mouth 9%, cold type symptoms 6%, decreased appetite/nausea 7%, heavy periods 3% (for up to six months), vaginal dryness and pain 10%, oh and both have caused cancer in rats and mice too.

That by the way is the average for each drug. If you take a combination you may get a more pronounced response because of the interactions.

Basically they work by causing cell death by changing your DNA - they are very smart drugs but quite irksome when you know about them.

NationalFlight · 28/05/2009 07:34

Thingone, just watch that diarrhoea - it was after 2 courses of cef that I developed c difficile.

It's a 3rd gen cephalosporin and thus one of the more liable to cause this...especially in combo with something else heavy duty such as flagyl. (metr)

If it doesn't get better sharpish, go back to Dr. I'd advocate taking saccharomyces during future courses a well (yeast based probiotic available in health shops as 'diarsafe') but it's contraindicated if you have potential for absorption into bloodstream from the gut, ie bleeding so don't take if you are having that (can cause fungaemia)

Hope it clears up, probiotics a good idea now you've finished the course, should be fine with acidophilus or similar. (during the course it's a bit pointless as the ab's kill them too! But not the yeast ones iyswim)

NationalFlight · 28/05/2009 07:36

and ironically c diff is usually treated with flagyl, even if it caused it in the first place...

however I'd bypass that option and demand the better drug (vancomycin) which they hate prescribing (expensive, fear of resistance developing as it's last resort for mRSA atm) but doesn't make you sick.

Far more people are able to be compliant using vanc.
Let me know if you do need more info

ThingOne · 28/05/2009 15:54

I haven't had ABs before for this infection. I've been very ill for two years. I've been treated for cancer (hoping I'm now"cured" but no chance of being sure!) so I've had lots of chemo, two major ops and more than my fair share of complications. I have asthma too. I've had metro two or three times in the last 18 months, but not two courses together (well possibly when I was in hospital with sepsis but I was so ill I can't really tell you!).

I don't think I've had ceflaxin for over a year. My GP usually doses me with co-amoxiclav for my chest (you can't take risks with an asthmatic on chemo).

This wound was the wound from the removal of my Hickman line which, true to form, was a complete nightmare and took more than twice as long as it should have done, blah-di-blah.

Thanks for the tip about diarsafe. My diarrhoea has pretty much gone already. My stoma (my cancer has left me with a colostomy) is still sore and bleeding but I hope the yoghurt will start attacking that. If not will attempt trip to buy this.

NationalFlight · 28/05/2009 17:02

Hi Thingone, you sound extremely well versed in it all! Glad the side effects are clearing up, you don't need any more trouble for sure...and I really, really hope you've seen off the cancer.

If you wanted that daiarsafe stuff it's available mail order too - the website is called Dtecta (not a typo) and it's about 5.99 for a box of 20. You can get it in bulk as well.

I took it for weeks after I recovered from C diff - apparently it's v popular on the continent just as a normal supplement. They're a funny lot over there though

brettgirl2 · 29/05/2009 18:45

Someone I work with asked their doctor what would happen if she drank on metronidazole (it was Christmas). He said that it could be fatal
