Could just be a tummy bug but I'd get it checked if I were you as you sound very concerned. I'm sure you'll be ok though. How long have you been on tablets?

nickytwotimes · 27/05/2009 11:20

You need to get it investigated.
It may well be that a stomach ailment has cause a bit of abrahsion in your gut, but still needs checking out.

morningsun · 27/05/2009 11:24

ask dr for work up for inflammatory bowel disease~blood tests called inflammatory markers,ESR,CRP also FBC.Also stool culture and maybe referral to gastro Dr.
how long have you had stomach ache and indigestion like symptoms?

NationalFlight · 27/05/2009 11:25

Stop taking your medication and see the gP today.

He/she will probably ask you to provide a stool sample in a little bottle to be sent off and tested.

Try not to worry - it could be nothing to worry about but OTOH it could be something that wants treating straight off.

Let us know how you get on x

NationalFlight · 27/05/2009 11:26

Btw what are the tablets you've been taking? Have you been on antibiotics recently?

hobbgoblin · 27/05/2009 11:31

I get this. I used to get it a lot about 4 years ago and was referred for a sigmoidoscopy which turned up zilch in terms of an explanation, then it just stopped.

Just this week, for the first time in years the symptoms have returned. I am pondering possible explanations.

The only things I can think of are that I had a Chinese take away from a new place which may have contained an irritant, I am pregnant and was pregnant twice during my first bout of these symptoms a few years back, I am possibly eating more bread than usual.

This is waaaaay tmi and grim but have you smelled it? Mine did not have the aroma one would expect considering from whence it came and was very distinctive which I will urge self to mention when I go to GP about it if this bout does not clear up. I think it may be a gluten or yeast intolerance.

Sheeta · 27/05/2009 11:34

was it bright red blood, or dried brown blood?

I would get an appt with your GP tbh..

NationalFlight · 27/05/2009 11:38

IBS can cause the mucous element, but not the bleeding.

Either the blood is from something separate, such as haemorrhoids, or a fissure etc or else it is in combination with the mucous and this would tend to indicate a very irritated colon.

It's never worth panicking about something unless you know it's dangerous, but this certainly merits investigation as it's not a normal symptom.

Morningsun sounds clued up - listen to her

Lulumama · 27/05/2009 11:42

i had this and it was a symtom of crohn's disease which is inflammatory bowel disease.. i would ask for a referral to a gastroenterologist as morningsun has suggested

cheeryface · 27/05/2009 13:11

i had a months worth of tablets first, doc said it might take that long to sort. i went back to a different doctor after the month, (stomach felt much worse without them) who gave me more of the tablets and said just take as needed. ive had the tablet every morning. they are lansoprazole.
it was bright red blood i would say and only a small amount but still worried!

Then get thee to a doctor - pronto - don't just sit there - call now and tell them its an emergency - you can't wait until a week next Tuesday.

Are you still here??? Well get moving - do something about it................

and BTW GOOD LUCK !!!

ThingOne · 27/05/2009 19:42

I second the "get thee to a doctor pronto" bit.

Sheeta · 27/05/2009 21:39

bright red is much less concerning than brown blood. will just be a tear rather than something horrible, but yes, GP immediately.

NationalFlight · 28/05/2009 07:22

Sheeta, sorry to disagree but it can indeed be something horrible!!

OP I hope you are Ok and have been seen and it's nothing scary.

Sheeta · 28/05/2009 09:00

Sorry, I should have said - I am in no way qualified to say such things, yes you're right.

cheeryface · 28/05/2009 16:17

been to the docs, i have to provide stool samples and i have a referral to gastro doctor.
he didnt tell me it was nothing though!

OP posts:
NationalFlight · 28/05/2009 17:05

Aw that was really brave...well done.

Did he give you any clues as to what it might be?

Hope it's nothing nasty, let us know how you get on - apparently having a colonoscopy etc isn't bad at all.

morningsun · 28/05/2009 17:33

well done
did he do the blood tests as well?

Curiousmama · 28/05/2009 19:01

Good although agree bright red isn't as worrying. You'll feel better once you've been tested. I've been there so know how worrying it can be, my blood was cherry coloured not bright so they were a bit concerned but turned out ok

cheeryface · 28/05/2009 22:20

no, he didnt give me a blood test but it might be because i had a blood test recently for something else and i think it probably included the one for inflammation.

stool samples..eek yuk! i have to do three samples 3 consecutive days..trouble is i havent even had the urge to erm go today and im dreading handing them over at reception as i know 3 of the receptionists, all mums from school!!

OP posts:
morningsun · 28/05/2009 23:00

Put them in a bag and ask if there is a box to put the samples in yourself.

morningsun · 29/05/2009 00:03

if they are occult bloods they go in a special envelope, all closed up.

NationalFlight · 29/05/2009 07:39

Cheery you might be able to drop them off at pathology yourself, if you're local to the hosp. I used to do this - they ought to be refrigerated anyway, so it's the best chance of an accurate result, or keep them in the fridge at home (obv in a bag, or something!!)

I think that's right anyway. Depends what they are testing for.
