He thinks he has a stomach ulcer. He had one a couple of years ago. This morning he told me he had blood in his poo yesterday.

Panic panic.

Hope everything goes OK.

FabulousBakerGirl · 27/05/2009 10:16

Not phoned me yet.

Long appointment - good or bad?

Blood in poo can be linked to stomach ulcer. Good thing he's getting it checked.
And i wouldn't worry, he's probably still in the waiting room if your GP surgery is anything like ours!
Fingers crossed for you.

smudgethepuppydog · 27/05/2009 10:49

Have you heard from him yet? Seconding the fact that an ulcer can cause blood in his poo.

FabulousBakerGirl · 27/05/2009 13:39

Sorry, I went out.

GP doesn't think it is anything serious because of his age but has referred him for a scan (I think) at the hospital and he should go in 2 weeks. He has also given him a months supply of antibiotics to clear up the stomach ulcer. DH has gone to have a bath as he feels cold.

FBG, I am sure all that is wrong is a stomach ulcer, but don't let them fob him off with the age thing as an excuse for being slow with bowel cancer investigation. My brother was diagnosed with it at the age of 39. He is fine now, as most people will be if it is caught early enough, but people in their thirties can and do develop the disease.
I don't want to scare you though, and it most likely is a stomach ulcer as your GP suspects.

FabulousBakerGirl · 27/05/2009 13:50

That was what I was worrying about.

Any advice for us? Is 2 weeks okay to wait?

Sorry to hear about your brother.

OP posts:
luvaduck · 27/05/2009 14:06

yes 2 week wait is the fastest yoy will get

presumably its for investigation of his bowel rather than stomach ulcer

sounds like Gp is doing the right thing

(blood in poo from stomach ulcer would be black tar like - called melaena - not fresh red blood, unless it was torrential and then he would know about it. so blood prob coming from lower GI tract - ie colon, and most likely cause is piles but other nastier things needs to be ruled out, hence referral)

FabulousBakerGirl · 27/05/2009 14:22

thank you
the gp thinks two issues.
this gp is a really lovely man and also very good at getting on the phone when needed.

Yes, FBG, two week wait is very good, as long as they are investigating the bowel thing - but if you are in any doubt about this it is worth checking back with your GP.
As luvaduck says fresh blood is nearly always piles, so don't worry overmuch.

FabulousBakerGirl · 27/05/2009 14:49

The GP did mention heammoroids but aren't they visable?

OP posts:
luvaduck · 27/05/2009 15:28

no only if they are grade 4

FabulousBakerGirl · 27/05/2009 15:59

Didn't even know there were grades!

He could be cold from losing a bit of blood - could be a bit anaemic. Did gp suggest taking some iron tabs to boost it up a bit? or does that affect the ulcer medication? - I'm not a medical person.
Hope he's ok though

FabulousBakerGirl · 27/05/2009 18:00

He doesn't look good

Just shouted at the kids (they deserved it tbh but it isn't like him) and he had a sleep this afternoon until work rang They can't manage a bloody day without him.

Poor you FBG. I was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2007. It was missed for a long time as I was "young" (just 40) and had just had children.

There are plenty of us here who have had colonoscopies and other similar joys and we can hold your hand through them.

FabulousBakerGirl · 27/05/2009 21:26

That is what he has to have - a colonoscopy. He couldn't remember.

In 2 weeks I will be getting my results for my unexplained bleeding. Oh what joy in the baker household.

Well the upside is you get to watch the inside of your colon on a TV screen as the camera goes up. It's what they call shit TV.
