My eldest DD suffers from epilepsy and used to have awful fits. I was always told that unless the fits go on for longer than 5mins she wouldn't need to go into hospital. If the epilepsy is newly diagnosed then more tests need to be done to find out more re the type of epilepsy. If its a standard thing then you can just manage as best you can. Really feel for you as seeing a person you love get a fit is something I wouldn't wish on anyone...try to talk to an Epilepsy care line such as www.epilepsysociety.org.uk/Homepage
for more guidance.

Hi

My DP has epilepsy - I've lived with it for years and Catlumps is correct - he never needs to go to A&E unless the seizure lasts longer than what is normal for him, he hurts himself / bangs his head when it starts, or he has more than two within a 4 hour period.

I have to say, the care he has had sometimes has been shocking - he was kept overnight once and they didn't give him his tablets, so he ended up having seizures again when I got him home

Sometimes he looks OK to ambulance crew, but I know he is still not right - I have now learnt to ask them to perform basic tests - ask him questions about name, age, DOB, name of prime minister, current year etc - usually these sorts of questions prove that he is "altered" - usually giving answers a good few years in the past - and that persuads the medical profession that he needs to be admitted.

If this is new, or it is unusual for him to experience two so close together, then really push for some answers - I know how scary it is and how lonely and strange it feels when DP is not "with it"

The epilepsy society have a forum where you can talk to others and get a huge amount of fantastic information and support - do follow the link that Catlumps gave you - it will really help

I hope today has been better for him and you ?

My DP tends to have multiples if he is unwell, eg after a 3 week bout of flu, and also if he is given antibiotics as this can reduce the absorption of the medication.

When he has multiples, it becomes quite scary as he never quite recovers in between them, so he is in the room, but not really there - very scary and it can take some days / weeks for his memory to return.

A GP once gave me some stuff - a sedative I think - that you can apply rectally to stop the multiple seizures. I've never used it - DP threw it all out as he couldn't bear the thought of me having to apply them to him.

I have read that there may be something that you can just put under the tongue to dissolve these days, and works to prevent multiple seizures - worth looking in to perhaps.
