Please can someone help me with a wisdom tooth removal question?

If my dentist has referred me to the hospital to have a wisdom tooth out, do I have to pay for it?

I should probably be asking how much will it hurt, but I don't want to know the answer to that one!

No, you won't have to pay for it. The hospital took out one of my impacted wisdom teeth. I think they refer the ones that might be a bit tricky, mine was a bit hard to get out, took about 35 mins of cutting and wrenching, I've had more fun in my life I must say. But there wasn't much pain afterwards, very achy and uncomfortable for a few days, and I had the most shocking bruising down my neck! But far less painful than when it had been giving me grief. You'll probably be suprised how much better you feel once its gone.

I'm so pleased its out now, I don't have any pressure in that part of my jaw. I want all the others out too, but they're in my sinuses so they aren't keen on doing it .

Thanks Meglet - were you under anaesthetic (sp) and how long did you have to stay in for? I'm pretty sure the dentist said I would have to have a have a general.

Oh well it can't be worse than 2 days and nights of contractions, surely, (can it)?!

I had a local. Although I got the impression the guy doing it was having second thoughts as it became clear it would be a tricky one extraction. He called me at home in the evening to make sure I was ok, not bad for nhs! Tis a good thing I'm not scared of dentists or else I'd have been a gibbering wreck.

I think that these days you can go home after a general after a few hours if you have someone to look after you.

Which ones are you having out?

I had a local when one of mine were taken out. I didn't have to pay anything. The procedure was actually fine, so I made a complete numpty of myself by fainting in the chair when the oral surgeon injected me with the local (god knows why...though I also fainted when I had my belly button pierced a decade ago, so I guess large needles and me don't mix)!

Anyhow, once I'd come round and my mouth was numb, surgeon yanked tooth and it came straight out with no bother. Bled for about 12 hours, on and off.

I've only got to have one out thankfully as it's impacted - bottom left. I'm not really scared of dentists but only ever been in hospital to give birth so just a bit inexperienced about the whole thing really. (putting on brave face but really a bit scared emoticon!)

Usually if its bottom ones they will give you a general, I had both of mine out at the same time under general at the local day surgery unit - went in at 8, was out by 2, it wasnt pretty, needed a good few days on bed rest to get back onto my feet, liquids only for a couple of days too - although strangely I didnt loose any weight-milkshakes and mash potato with butter mustnt be very slimming

If its a local then they'll pump your jaw full of anaesthetic so you won't feel anything. The dentist kept jabbing more + more in my jaw until I said I couldn't feel a thing, he knew the tooth was pressing on a nerve so he didn't want me hitting the roof (or him) if he touched it. I just found it uncomfortable and stressful to keep my mouth open for so long while the dentist sawed at the tooth to break it down and get it out bit by bit. Lots of deep breathing and trying to relax got me through it.

But I would go through it all again if they would take the other 3 out. It really is worth it.

Get lots of nice soup and ice cream to eat for a couple of days.

Soup, mash with butter and ice cream - sounds good to me. I'll make sure I make my fave soups beforehand in preparation.

Not so keen on the sawing of the tooth to get it out part.

Thanks very much for your replies I appreciate it .

I was referred to the hospital and did not pay, I tried to be brave and just have a local, but wish I had had the general. I was a bit shaken after the local.
