How do you know if you have piles and how to treat? (Maybe TMI)

Would rather not go to the doctor TBH but basically I am having pain when I go for a poo. It is agony and it actually making me hold it in, which I know will probably make it worse but I can't help it. I can't feel anything there though. My mum said if it were piles, I would feel lumps? I don't really know what/where I am meant to be feeling but I can't notice it. But it hurts a lot - although I have had hard stools so it might just be that. When I have managed to go, I have bled (just like a tiny bit on a tissue).

Is there something I can get from a chemist? If I rush I might be able to get to a late night one in the supermarket or something.

Or is there anything else I can do to help? I really need to go but it is too painful

It's always worth getting it checked properly by GP.

It might be a fissure, a small cut at the entrance to your bottom. It can be caused passing hard stools. Lactulose is a stool softener that will help when you have your bowels open. Increase your fibre and water intake too.

As said before, get it checked by a doctor.

HTH.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 18/05/2009 21:38

Lots of water too!

JennyPenny22 · 18/05/2009 22:02

Where do I get lactulose from?

Don't just try random things you've read about on the internet. Go and see your GP. You've had children? Then you can cope with someone checking your bum.

JennyPenny22 · 18/05/2009 22:12

yes but I want to get something tonight. It hurts and need to go asap. Been on the loo in tears and still haven't done it!

Lactulose - any chemist.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 19/05/2009 14:45

Take some pain killers.

Someone was talking about glycerin suppositories. Although on this info it says not to use if breast feeding.

Any better today?

ThingOne · 19/05/2009 14:49

Have you made an appointment with the GP?

JennyPenny22 · 19/05/2009 17:16

GP can't see me till friday. . I took some sennacot tablets last night but hasn't made much difference. I have some of those fibre drinks - do you think these would help? Not sure if to take more Senna? I also have some CALFIG - but don't know if it is safe to take both? And it smells awful?

I had exactly this after about three weeks of having DS2. I thought it was piles too but it seems to have gone now (DS2 now 8.5 weeks)

Joolsiam · 19/05/2009 17:23

If you are having pain from hard stools, then adding more fibre won't help You need a stool softener like lactulose and to drink lots of water to soften up what is there already.

The glycerin suppositories are fab - they just lubricate everything so it slips out easier - pop one in, jump in a warm bath and you will probably get the urge to go within around 15 mins...

I honestly don't see why you can't use them when BF or PG as they seem completely harmless - perhaps a quick word with a pharmacist would help ?

plantsitter · 19/05/2009 17:34

Ask the chemist - if you say you have a GP appt they will give you something in the meantime I should think. Best to check when you're breastfeeding anyway.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 19/05/2009 17:49

I think sennakot and Calfig both make the urge to go stronger rather than soften things, iyswim.

Fibre should help soften but you also need water to help.

Exercise is also good for getting things going, if you feel up to it.

Avoid banans, eggs and chocolate as they all 'bung you up'.

Does your gp do telephone consultations instead of waiting until friday?

ThingOne · 19/05/2009 20:17

I can't see how a glycerin suppository would be a problem with bf either. I suspect it's just not licensed. I would use them and drink plenty of water.

Hope you can ease these along before Friday. And don't let the GP fob you off.

Hi - I had my first baby 12 weeks ago and had the same problem when going to the loo after a couple of weeks. It hurt so much!! I tried lactulose, sennakot and drinking loads of water but it was still agony - in the end my boyfriend went to get me some suppositries and I managed to go within 15 minutes. I took lactocose regularly for the next week to keep everything soft and it seems to have improved since. Oh, and I'm breast-feeding and didn't have any problems when I used the suppositry. I'm now eating a few dried apricots every day to keep regular, which seems to be working out ok.

girlandboy · 19/05/2009 22:53

I had this a week or two after giving birth.

It was a tiny fissure (felt like the grand canyon it was so painful) and the gp gave me some anaesthetic gel to put on before a bowel movement.

It worked really well (made it go numb), and the fissure healed very quickly.

Ask the chemist for something.
