Anyone else experience this type of pain in the abdomen?

I have googled but I can't see anything that fits the symptoms that I'm experiencing. It's around the navel area but the pain can move to either side and radiates to the back. It only lasts for a few minutes each time, but the excruciating stabbing like pain corresponds with my pulse. Any ideas?

Hi

Not a medical person at all but do have experience of appendicitis - both in myself and my elder daughter . If it carries on think you should contact your doc .

HTH

could well be gall stones or heartburn
if its one sided could be kidney stones (this is more around loin to groin)
appendicitis does start with a central abdo pain, before it moves down to right lower hand side. Usually you can't eat and are slightly sick.
see a doc today (seriously)

gallstone pain is in the upper right hand part of abdomen, so it doesn't sound like gallstones - you'd know about it if it was gallstones., believe me!

luvaduck · 18/05/2009 13:58

it can also be central, have seen it many many times

unfortunately not all bodies read the textbooks first!

Gallstone pain doesn't last for a few minutes

I really think you should see a GP asap about this too. They are in the best position to diagnose rather than via internet googling and forum asking. Honestly, abdomen pain is not to be ignored as it could be anything from incredibly painful trapped wind to something a lot more serious and requiring treatment. Not trying to scare, just saying what you already know really!

My DH had gallstone attacks that took a year till his final op and end to the problem. The sooner these things are properly diagnosed, the faster the treatment I guess.

Just so you have something to compare with your pain: Hhs gallstone attacks came on fast with no real warning symptoms, were central, stabbing but also radiating to the back. He always complained of the pain a little higher than you are suggesting - originally he thought it was a heart attack (so did the ambulance crew). The severity was intense - unable to speak, grey sweating ball on the floor, and lasted longer than a few minutes - half an hour to even several hours.

yes it can do in the form of biliary colic.

gallstones can also cause cholecystitis which is a contstant pain, an ileus - like a bowel obstruction, a pancreatitis and many other things.
I'm not saying IT is gallstones, not even top of the list, it is just one of several possibilities along with bowels spasms or some kind of blockag/infection/start of appendicitis etc etc etc

But what i am saying is you need to be seen in person by a doctor who will examine you as there are literally hundreds of causes of abdo pain, and it is not something that can be diagnosed over the internet. It will depend on examination findings.

it may well be nothing, but again can't say over the internet.

Thank you all for your help.

It doesn't necessarily start in the centre, it can begin at the left/right but always moves along. But the biggest symptom that I just can't match up with anything is that the stabbing pain always corresponds to my heart beat and only lasts a few minutes.

I know I should be asking the doc than a forum, but it's such an unusual symptom that I can't google it, and I thought that maybe someone on MN might have heard of it. I will see if any of the conditions mentioned sounds similar to what I'm experiencing. Thanks

is it tender? if so is it painful when you press or when you release pressure? do you have a temperature?

you really should get checked out by GP or out of hours. they'll be able to listen to and feel your abdomen.

thirtysomething · 18/05/2009 17:22

I've had apendicitis and the pain was something like you've described - but I was sick too and looked incredibly pale and a bit "green", or so I was told! Mine escalated very quickly but I also had a period of a couple of hours, just before the surgery in fact, where the pain had gone. I also wondered if you could have an ovarian cyst or something like that?

macwoozy · 19/05/2009 12:59

I don't think it's appendicitis as the pain is on the left side too. And it's not tender.

Oh well, looks like I'm not going to be able to fathom this out and will have to take a trip to the doc.

Thanks all
