i was sent to a&e on thursday after being in pain on right hand side, presented with no infection but blood in urine.

doc said we will send u to a&e for a x ray but they needed to do a ct scan on kidneys so was sent home with voltarol and co codamol.

have to wait until in first ten days of cycle b4 i can get the ct scan.

so waiting game by that time the stones may be away, and what will be the point???

i have had similar symptoms 4 but they just said oh the stone s should pass which i presume they did.

i am in a lot of pain but am just popping pills and sleeping

CT scan is a bit extreme, they should be doing an IVU which is a small series of x-rays, the dose is far lower then a CT and it's better at looking at the drainage of the kidneys. It can take time for the stones to get out, depending on their size. Keep drinking to flush them out, if it's really painful and the cocodamol/voltarol are not doing much you really do need to go back. If you can get away with an IVU then have this, a CT won't show if the ureter/urethra is blocked, you need an IVU for this.
Did you not see a urologist?

You can wee into a tea strainer if you are despirate enough to want to see the stones.

HI, i suffer from kidney stones for years now , most of the time i pass them myself but 2 years ago i had a procedure using a laser machine that blasts the stones into a dust like substance which is much easier 2 pass , ask your urologist if this is possible for you to get ,
poor you the pain can be terrible , i passed a kidney stone on my wedding night so i know how bad the pain can be , hug]

My DH has suffered with kidney stones for many years some he has passed and 23 years ago had to be operated on as one was stuck in the urethra. I can sympathise with you about the pain. He has two more in one kidney but according to his urologist who he saw on Saturday for his check up of his prostrate and kidneys won't be going anywhere as too big. He has an ordinary x-ray every year and the stones show up but he does pay to have it done privately but I do know of people recently having it done on NHS. In fact have never heard of anyone having a ct scan. Pinklady5 you said you had the laser machine proceedure to blast the stones 2 years ago, was if very painful? My DH also had it done many years ago and he said it was agony the machine thumping your back every 30 seconds for 30 minutes I keep telling him things have changed since then.

I had a CT for stuck kidney stones, not sure of the reason as I was taken ill on holiday and it was all Greek to me! (I was in Cyprus LOL)
They did an ultra sound, IVP ting and then the CT
(As my stone was stuck, I had a double j stent inserted which means that my wee was able to escape LOL - then on return to UK I went in for stent removal and basket retrieval of the stone)

sorry mowbraygirl but yes it was VERY painful , in fact they strapped me down on the table it took about 40 mins but i had 2 go back for 3 sessions before the stone broke up , & because i have asthma the doctors would not give me any pain relief i too had a problem when i was 18 a big stone got caught & caused a blockage in my right kidney , the hospital removed 75% of my right kidney due to extensive damage , i go for a renogram xray every year to be on the safe side.

The normal procedure is an IVU, which is a series of abdominal x-rays after a dye has been given via a cannula. A CT will show if there are stones and where they are but not if they are blocking the ureter, it's pretty much a static picture IYSWIM. An ultrasound can also be done, this will also show up stones. They do sometimes CT them as this shows a detailed structure but the usual route is an IVU as it shows how well the kidneys are draining. Its alot less radiation aswell. The 10 day rule is incase a patient is pregnant as a CT is a big dose.

I'd go back if I were you and tell them you are still feeling unwell, despite the painkillers. You do need to get it checked again if your tummy's bigger then it normally is, this really does need checking. Are you weeing OK? Thirsty?

wonderif · 18/05/2009 09:08

hi all and thanks for all ur replies

yeh fluffy i am weeing ok and am thirsty maybe not as much as usual but am still trying to drink plenty.

i feel a lot better than i have done and last night was the first night i didnt take a volatarol going to bed.

i had a ultarsound b4 showed no stones, just that one kidney was smaller than the other one and also showed a cyst on ovary that i was advised would burst.

so i wonder could the pain be anything to do with the cyst.

i will leave it as it is, and wait for the ct scan as i am not in severe pain anymore i am not too concerned.
