Ive had a letter after my 1st smear test to say the result is abnormal and i need to go back for further tests....can anyone let me know what will happen?

Okay first of all no need to panic

Can you tell us what the names of the further tests are - should be in the letter

alp · 15/05/2009 12:35

Don't panic first of all, a lot will depend on how 'abnormal' the test was.

So I can only go on my experience which was treatmnt for CIN3: I was called back to the Gynae Clinic for a colposcopy which is a detailed smear test. It doesn't hurt and is similar to a smear test they can just see to what extent you test was abnormal or confirm what the inital smear told them.

You can then be either treated there and then or will be asked to go back - it was completely my decision and I didn't feel pushed into anything. But as I turned into some kind of jelly-legged fool, I decided to go back as I couldn't deal with it all in one visit.

You can always go and chat to your GP who will explain the results to you.

Hope this helps

Thanks for replying...i need to go for a colposcopy. It says there were some changes called moderate dyskaryosis.

fifisboys

please dont worry

i have had several colposcopys

this explains what happens

Guadalupe · 15/05/2009 12:53

I think you would have a biopsy for moderate changes. I had the loop treatment there and then as mine was CIN 3 (severe) but apparently the biopsy is very quick and you hardly feel it though I don't speak from experience.

Mild to moderate changes are very common, and even if you do need the treatment, it is quick and that is usually the end of it. Try not to worry too much. Good luck.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 15/05/2009 12:56

I had loop diathermy for moderate changes

It involved having a local anaesthetic injected into my cervix (a bit oochie but I held the nurse's hand), then the cells were burnt away

This was four years ago, and I had 6 monthly smear tests afterwards for 3 years, now on yearly checks and expecting to return to 3 yearly soon

HTH

Thanks everyone...ive had a read up on it a bit and i do feel a bit better...still worried sick though!

Before I went in to have the colposcopy, the Dr explained there were two options depending on what she saw, it would either be a punch biopsy where they take a small amount which can be done under a local or a cone biopsy which can be done either local or general.

I had a cone biopsy and returned 6 months later for a smear and colposcopy. All which were clear and I now need to go for smears every 6months.

I hope everyone has helped you find what you need to know.

fifisboys · 15/05/2009 13:43

yes it has helped, thank you alp.

Just a question..i have a huge fear of being put under ga..if i do need a cone biospy can you request this to be done under local..i know that should be the last of my worries but it would be a big thing for me.

OP posts:
alp · 15/05/2009 15:46

Part of the reason I turned into a jelly-legged (and crying) fool was due to the prospect of a GA but I was too worried to have it done under a local so I was a little stuck between the two choices! I went back and had the con e biopsy under GA rather than the local there and then.

BellaNoir · 15/05/2009 22:10

Hi fifisboys
Usually if you need treatment it is now a LLETZ - large loop excision of the transformation zone which is a much smaller piece of cervix removed than with a cone biopsy.
This usually only needs a local anaethestic (I had one with a local and it was fine) but you can request to have a GA if you would prefer it.
The BSSCP website also has some helpful info. It is the association of colposcopists.
There's been a few threads recently in this topic about colposcopy as it seems quite a few of us have been there and we've lived to tell the tale

Try not to worry

I have had abnormal results for about 5 years now but I have never needed treatment, my test ranged from a colposcopy, biopsy..i attend yearly now for a smear

the clinics are very thorough and helpful
telephone them for reassurance, they were very good with me as I was sick with worry

hope all goes well

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/05/2009 12:43

i had a ga as when i had a local i couldnt relax enough and they couldnt get the instrument up me

so appointment got rescheduled for a week later

deleting · 16/05/2009 12:54

try not to worry, it's common. I had CIN3 severe abnormality and they lasered them off. Have to go for yearly smears now, but nothing has shown up since. They did biopsy as well, but it's all a precaution at this stage. I was worried sick when I got the letter too, but really it will be fine. It's all pre cancerous.

floppybits · 16/05/2009 20:32

exactly same for me as deleting. gave up smoking tho!!
