Would a Sonographer lie?

If she/he did a scan and found something that looked sinister, would they instead say that 'they where not at all suspicious' just to make the patient feel better?

Strange question yes, but i am about to do another thread that will explain.

I doubt it.

SoupDragon · 15/05/2009 12:23

No, I think they are usually vague rather than lying.

Tocca · 15/05/2009 12:25

No, I would be astonished if they outright reassured, agree with SoupDragon re vagueness.

diedandgonetodevon · 15/05/2009 12:25

I wouldn't think so. There would be no reaon for them to do it. After all it's not usually them that break the bad news anyway.

loopylou6 · 15/05/2009 12:27

Thanks guys, that's reasurring

I can see no reason for them to lie.

I think they would be more likely to say nothing or mutter something about needing to get someone else to take a look TBH.

loopylou6 · 15/05/2009 20:25

WYS i have another thread about my dad and his thyroid, that will explain.
NDS thanks.

I have had a few scans and I only ever get information out of them by going on and on and on at them, craning my neck round to llok at the monitor and asking loads of questions they can't ignore. One managed to ignore me and didn't even mention that I was in the early stages of pregnancy at the time.

Marthasmama · 15/05/2009 23:46

here Here

I think the sonographers are n=more information collectors and then the consultant looks at all of the case, including blood test, scans, xrays etc.

so the sonographers have to be cagey- it isn't up to them to diagnoses/manage a case.
They repost theri findings to the consultant who does diagnose and manage the case IYSWIM

Bonneville · 16/05/2009 00:01

Survey - that is exactly right.

thumbwitch · 16/05/2009 00:05

I don't think they are ALLOWED to make any kind of comment that could be construed as diagnostic, as that isn't their job. Any dodgy findings would be glossed over and they would go quiet and vague and muttery, as others have said.

SoupDragon · 16/05/2009 11:26

That depends on what her qualifications are. She may not have been "just" a sonographer taking pictures/measurements.

Certainly the sonographers I saw at an detailed antenatal scan weren't, they were fully qualified to make comment and frequently did.

loopylou6 · 16/05/2009 11:37

she must of been quite qualified as my dad told her he had recently found another small lump at the side of his neck, she put the scanner over it and told him it was and nothing to worry about

OP posts:
loopylou6 · 16/05/2009 11:37

hmmmm so you think she was being unprofessional by commenting that she didn't have reason to think it was suspicious? Coz obviously they know don't they?
