Any medical peeps around- mass found on chest after chest x ray...what could this be?

My Grandad is 77 and had bladder cancer two years ago. He had his bladder and prostate removed and treatment and he had the all clear.

A few months ago, he had a hernia which they removed. They then found an aneuryism (sp!) which they are keeping an eye on as they cannot operate on it when it is too small and its dangerous when its too big, so will operate when its at the right stage.

A few months ago, he was walking the dog and threw a stick for her. He then felt a searing pain in the opposite shoulder/arm to which he threw the stick and then a lump appeared. He has pain with this ever since

He is on co-codamol for the pain and has had a full body scan/bone scan which we are awaiting the results for. He had chest x-rays on Monday and today his GP phoned and said the chest specialist will need to see him within the next few days as they found a mass. The dr didn't seem too concerned.

Any ideas as to what this could be? Obviously I know there is a risk that once a person has had cancer once, it can come back in other areas.

The lump is hard, but not moveable and doesn't hurt for him to move the arm. He also seems to be losing weight. I'm kind of concerned its cancer tbh..

Any help/advice appreciated.

Puss

It could be a variety of things including cancer but there really is absolutely no point at all in trying to guess what it is before he sees the specialist. You only have one part of the picture and the specialists will either know more or will do more investigations.

i guess it could be any number of things and obviously cancer will be the one you are worrying about, it would be easy for me to type "don't worry" but it won't stop you doing so.
i hope you get some answers soon.

how many xrays did they do? 1 or 2?
did the dr book him in for a ct scan?

where i work if we see something on a chest xray we take a second picture (sideways on) it then gets reported on the same day and the gp will also then be informed. they are meant to call the pt in asap and inform them whats going on and tell them they are being fast tracked as they had a suspicious xray. they then recieve a ct scan with in 2 weeks of the chest xray.
if it is a chest specialist it doesnt make me think cancer straight away more of something else maybe or he may be sent to an oncology clinic

PussinJimmyChoos · 18/05/2009 14:23

Worley - thanks for reply.

He had a full body scan/bone scan the other week, last Monday was the chest x ray and his GP called him a few days later to say they had found the mass and that he needs to see the chest specialist.

Then, the GP spoke to the oncologist that has been taking care of him post bladder cancer (making sure it hasn't returned etc) and she said there was no rush to bring any appointments forward as she is seeing him this week. So, he has oncology appt this week and waiting for the chest appt

I should add that he is losing weight, doesn't have much appetite and he's feeling the cold more (probably due to not eating as much/weight loss)..the dr also mentioned his white blood cell count was up and mentioned an infection somewhere but didn't prescribe antibiotics, so you can see why the warning bells are going off for me
