URGENT - operation + overnight stay if you have a bf baby

I broke my foot several weeks ago and have been in plaster since. Went to the hospital today hoping to get the plaster off. Unfortunately i was not given the all-clear I was x-rayed again and saw the consultant. The doctor said he suspected ligament damage and sent me to have a ct scan. He said that I might need an operation and it might take place tomorrow but nothing more was said

By the time I had the CT the doctors had all left. One of the nurses phoned me at home to say that I should have been sent back to the ortho clinic to get another plaster and that I should not eat or drink anything after midnight in case I need an operation. I am meant to report to the hospital at 9.30 where the doctor wil decide whether i can just get another plaster or whether I will get an opertion. From what the nurse said I assume I will be operated on straight after ortho clinic

Problem is with my ds. He is 6 months old and has not yet taken a bottle or solids. We have tried him a couple of times with a bottle and he has chewed the teat and spat out any milk.

My questions are

  • will i get a general anesthetic? (sp)
  • will i be kept in overnight?
  • are they obliged to find me a room with accomodation for my baby too so i can look after him overnight? He still wakes several times a night for a feed
  • if I can't keep him what do i do? send him home with dh and cross my fingers?

Hi, no advice but please consider posting in the breast and bottle feeding section as someone really knowledgable will be along v. quickly.

I needed surgery when my baby was 9 months and she had never taken a bottle. It was a different sort of surgery, so I don't know whether this is useful info, but just in case:

I asked for a spinal anaesthetic which meant that I was able to get home and feed her safely. The anaesthetist was very pleased and said she thought it was a very sensible thing to do, much less unpleasant recovery than from a general. And safe to feed my baby afterwards, unlike with a general.

I did also leave DH with a bottle of expressed milk to give at bedtime, as I wasn't back in time for that. She screamed blue murder but did take it and go to sleep.

Good luck!

Phone the hospital first thing and ask all these questions. They are clearly a bit rubbish at communication not to have discussed any of this with you already - it is supposed to be 'informed consent'.
Tell them about DS being BF and point out that DH does not lactate and DS will not take a bottle (what would they do if you were a lone parent without parental/other support for example?).
If they are crap, phone your hospitals PALS department and explain the situation - they are there to provide advice, support and liaison for patients and may be able to sort things out on your behalf.
Good luck, here's hoping you just need a new cast.

Thanks for the advice. The ortho clinic was empty before I went up to ct so I couldn't ask any questions. Will pack an overnight bag for me and ds and take it to hosp tomorrow. I'll see what they say and if he can't stay I'll ask if I can have op on Mon which will give some time for pumping and cup/ teat training. Hosp was v pro bf when I had my dcs so heres hoping. Got a call out to my cousin who is an anaesthetist. She may be able to advise on options

Will report back and let you know. Heres hoping that I don't need op and will be back in plaster.

How did it go?

nulgirl · 15/05/2009 17:04

Update - went back to the hospital and they have said that I don't need the operation. Another few weeks in plaster should suffice. Phew!!

Going to start weaning this weekend. Got the incentive of a wedding in Ireland at the end of July. Mum has said that if he'll take a bottle then they'll have both dcs overnight and let us have our first childfree night since dd was born in 06. A great incentive.

That is good news for you.

I was just going to add that when DD was 11 weeks I had to have extensive internal/external repair work and D&C done.

I had a GA (wasn't offerred another option) but was told that if I wanted DD to stay with me overnight I would have to provide a responsible adult to care for her as I would be drowsy and they wouldn't help her/me.

As my only 'responsible' adult was DH, who had been asleep from 'exhaustion' since I started coming round (from looking after DD for 3 hours on his own) and I had to have her lie on me whilst I was still half zonked.

I discharged myself and went home to cook supper for my DH.

Very good news, nulgirl. You must be relieved. Have fun with the weaning! DD2 is 7 months now and loving the food.

at your DH, Marmaduke!

Indeed Aranea I haven't fully trained him yet but he is much improved!
