I am being refered to a periodontist because my teeth are 'mobile'. I'm terrified!!!

Has anybody else had this??

I know that there is a tiny bit of 'give' in my bottom lower teeth but they don't feel like they're going to fall out, but dentist said it's been caught in time... (I don't want to be a goon in 15 yrs).

I also have a misaligned bit and some gum recession.

I always feel very depressed when I come out of the dentist. This is all going to be very expensive too. My Mum said to me 'at least you don't have breast cancer'. Can I not feel sorry for myself for one day????

Yes you can off course feel sorry for yourself....you have my full sympathies as I have been in a similiar place though my teeth were not mobile just a lot of gum recession.

Have you recently had a baby?
Do you smoke?
How many teeth are mobile and where in your mouth are they (think possibly front)?
What type of toothbrush do you use?
Do you floss?
Do you use a mouth wash?
Did the dentist say you had pockets or tell you any numbers for your teeth

Sorry for all the questions jsut trying to get a picture of what is happening in your mouth and see if I can offer some advice.

SO with you on; this one...I now have mine in control but still keeping on top of it.

MsMaggieBeauregarde · 13/05/2009 18:03

Thanks cosi, I don't smoke, hardly drink and I have two children, youngest is 3.

I used to use a mouthwash but stopped as I felt it was making my gums sore. Floss sometimes

It is the bottom middle teeth. The two middle ones particularly, but the bottom four in total that the dentist is worried about..

She didn't say anything about pockets!

Glad to hear that you're on top of your teeth problems.

I just know I am going to dream about teeth falling out tonight!

I have had loads of those dreams.........so so scary and I wake up in a blind panic. The mobile teeth can be fixed by deep cleaning and the tartar removed form underneath the gum line. They are mobile because of gum recession and bone loss but a deep clean can really help strengthen the gums and let teeth fit snug again. I always use a Phillips sonicare toothbrush and feel strongly that this is the thing after my deep clean that actually saved my teeth!!!. I know its an awful task but try and floss everyday if you can it will keep the gums strong and nice and snug to the teeth.

Dentistry has come a long way in recent years and with good oral care form yourself & the periodontist the dentist can do a lot to save your teeth.....I feel I am lucky as mine was jsut caught in time too, like yours.

Good luck and keep us updated on how things go at the periodontist.

thanks cosi. I only went in for a clean and to ask about teeth whitening!!

You can ask to be referred to a dental hospital treatment there is cheaper/free cos students practice on you - my ds1 has terrible ortho probs hes had gum surgery too(his gums grew over his teeth) and he had v badsly aligned teeth - hes now wearing a brace not available on the NHS- worth over 2.5k and thats funded by the hospital.

The peridontologist is very brilliant and im sure you will feel much better about the situation once you have seen him/her.

Whereabouts are you? we go to the manchester dental hospital.

MsMaggieBeauregarde · 13/05/2009 19:56

wow... that sounds risky!

I wouldn't mind a brace. If my teeth are mobile then it shouldn't be that hard to make my teeth straighter..... In theory I guess.

I'm in Dublin... So, although there is a dental hospital, there's a LONG waiting list. But I have a consultation with a private guy on monday and if he says that I don't urgently need to do anything then I could go on the waiting list for the dental hospital and wait and wait.... (one year waiting list )

I was just asking dh about this and he said they also do clinics for people not registered so you could just go directly and see what happens.

With our dh we saw a regular oldcow ortho for 3 years after reducing ds to tears she finally said she couldnt do anything ds was devastated hence my email to the dental hospital and now his teeth are almost perfect his gums were cut back so accurately hes starting to look like Simon Cowell .

I think a year if you can wait would be worth it.

Do your gums 'look' ok?

MsMaggieBeauregarde · 13/05/2009 20:08

I think I will email them. there's an email address on their website.

I'm aware that my gums have receded a little, but I have these amalgam filling material put in where it's bad, to stop sensitivity and prevent further gum recession, so I didn't think it was THAT bad. Also, my teeth being mobile was a bit of a shock. That word together in the same sentence as teeth! omg.

I feel like they have just a tiny bit of give if I put pressure on them, but I have not (up til now) been worried that they were loose enough to fall out, or even become wobbly!

So maybe I should just exhale and calm down.. better caught now than in 15 yrs time when I'm ten minutes away from looking like a goon.

Did your son have periodontitis (just read about that, more common in adolescents). Glad everything's sorted out..

OP posts:
nickschick · 13/05/2009 20:12

Yes Id email them theres nothing to lose- the thing is years ago our parents werent so dental aware and most of them kept their teeth for years so i think you might just need to calm down a bit - i bet your sat there trying to wobble them with your tongue or avoiding anything crunchy or chewy....

MsMaggieBeauregarde · 13/05/2009 20:16

I feel like I'm going to just fall apart, bit by bit.. I only just had a mole removed 6 wks ago. You fix one thing, something else goes wrong

Hi I'm also seeing a periodontologist, have been posting on the thread 'severe gum disease'. Your problem sounds very treatable so please try not to worry (though I know how hard this is!). Hope you get to see a specialist soon who will explain what needs to be done. Good luck!

nickschick · 14/05/2009 07:14

No it wasnt periodontis -it was literally the gums covered his teeth how the 1st ortho didnt realise this I dont know - we were waiting for his teeth to 'come down' when they were down just covered with gum.
He had quite a lot of gum cut away in fact some sizeable chunks.

MsMaggieBeauregarde · 14/05/2009 11:21

SKy, is that thread on general health?
