sorry, tmi but... white smelly stuff in my bowel movement?

Sorry, this truly is gross but I have just done a poo and noticed a white lump on the side of the poo.

I removed the white lump - thought at first it might be tissue - but it was actually some smelly, infection-y smelling stuff.

I've had similar stuff in very small lumps in the back of my throat before, but never in my poo!!

Anybody any ideas what might be wrong?

Also, assuming the advice is 'see your doctor', does anybody know how they might investigate this?

Google is no help at all. Thanks and apologies for this particularly grim post.

mucous ?

FigmentOfYourImagination · 12/05/2009 17:50

sorry, mucus ?

Do you have coeliac disease ? Crohns ? Food allergies ?

Are the stools ok otherwise ?

Any blood ?

Pain on passing the stool ?

MorrisZapp · 12/05/2009 17:50

It was kind of solid, and smelled of infection, could it be impacted mucus or something?

I was diagnosed with IBS many years ago but don't take meds for it, and had assumed it had kind of gone away. I have had small amounts of blood a few times but assumed it was piles (I used pile cream and bleeding stopped).

I don't have coeliac or anything like that. It does hurt to pass a poo sometimes, but only at the surface ie not painful inside my bowel, also pain never lasts long.

I had a general anaesthetic last week for unrelated issue (cervical polyp removal) but recovered from that quickly and feel otherwise fine.

Stupid question but are you certain that the white stuff originated from your rectum ? Could it have attached itself on the way out (say some ewcm stuck on your perineum or whatnot got picked up along the way).

Have you any gynae symptoms of infection ?

MorrisZapp · 12/05/2009 17:57

Yes, was definitely from my bum. But have had gynae issues too, had cervical polyp removal last week.

MZ you haven't been on antibiotics have you?

MorrisZapp · 12/05/2009 18:01

No, no meds. Am otherwise fit and healthy.

Bum has been a bit itchy but assumed was piles- related.

Candida.

I have watched Spa of embarassing illnesses !

Will try and find you a link.

MorrisZapp · 12/05/2009 18:04

Is that basically thrush? I remember seeing Gillian McKeith ask a fat family 'do you have itchy bums' and she said it was from eating too much bread. I do eat a lot of bread/ cereal though am not overweight.

I thought that was an infection on the surface though, not inside bowel? ifswim.

I will check it out, tvm.

Ok, there's not one really great link out there, but you could google faecal candida and see what you make of what you read.

In SPA some people with IBS or even those with no bowel problems were passing white stuff in their bowel movements which the experts told them was candida.

Sycamoretree · 12/05/2009 18:06

Yes, it is. And the links I read would suggest a link with your throat issues too.

Sycamoretree · 12/05/2009 18:07

I should qualify, they were passing this white stuff once they started on the colonic irrigation. But yes, definitely they were told it was Candida.

hifi · 12/05/2009 18:09

i think its bum mucus, i have ibs and have it sometimes.

MorrisZapp · 12/05/2009 18:11

I have noticed my throat smelling/ tasting a bit off recently, I wonder if it's connected. Will do some research.

Thanks v much all.
