What could make you short of breath?

Been like this for about two weeks, also a little bit dizzy but nothing major. I used to have quite bad asthma as a child, and was convinced it was back, but just returned from GPs and he says it's unlikely and that my heart and lungs appear fine. He mentioned an underactive thyroid or anaemia. Anyone else had a similar experience?

anxiety?

I had anaemia and occasionally had shortness of breathe, but I also have health anxiety so my breathing got worse the more I panicked about it.

Anaemia.

I get short of breath when I have panic attacks .

Hope you feel better soon.

Has your doctor taken bloods to test? If not go back and get them done as both conditions are treatable providing you know which one it is.

anaemia certainly made me very short of breath. I also had pretty scary palpitations when my iron level was in my boots. Has he done a blood test?

morningsun · 11/05/2009 22:56

How can he say its not asthma unless you've been doing peak flows etc~this is definitely asthma season!
~ presume you are getting blood test if not make appt for them
~are you coughing or wheezy as well as sob and what time of day or night is it occurring?

He has taken bloods and can get results by end of week. It's been so long since I had asthma that I can't remember when 'asthma season' is, but it definitely feels that way. Like it's happened since all the grass has been cut, and also it's been very windy blowing all the pollen about. I used to suffer in September for some reason.
Not coughing or wheezy - which is why he said not asthma. Just feel like someone sitting on my chest.
Am also overweight - have bmi of about 29, although currently going to WW to lose it. I thought it might be that but it seems to have come on so suddenly.

well sob is a symptom of asthma and you don't necessarily have to be wheezy or coughing.
Different pollens are around at different time of year~my ds has had wheeziness in last week~its been windy by us with lots of pollen blowing around, blossom and grass pollen. In the autumn I think you get more tree pollens/moulds.
Keep an eye on your symptoms~4/5 am typical time for asthma,or on exercise or after being around grass outside,in car too if windows down.
Ask if you can have peak flow meter to check am and pm peak flows.

Thank you morning sun - when I call re the results I will make another appointment to discuss peak flow etc.
