14 month old sons testicles not dropped?

My health visitor says my son;s testicles are too high and by this age they should have come down? Doc wants to see him again in few weeks to check again. Has anybody had similar experience? Health visitor said it could need op?

Same happened to my son when he was a baby (on one side). Doctor kept saying to come back and would check again and would come down naturally and it didn't. In the end he did require an op at 13m though was nothing major. Has the HV managed to feel them in their higher position?

She can feel both there but she says they are a bit high. After having 2 girls, I wasnt sure how they should be at that age, but he doen't have anything dangling?! The doc said he could be cold and I did tell him that they're like that all the time, even when warm and after a bath?

Good that she can feel them clearly. A GP said she could feel ds's but then dif GPs at subsequent checks couldn't and so referred me to a great urologist who said couldn't feel it and it turned out it was small and not fully formed or malformed (formed incorrectly rather than just small) - the urologist could tell immediately. As your son is 14m I'd ask for a referral to a paediatric urologist who will be able to tell you immediately what if anything needs doing - I do understand that these things usually sort themselves out on their own so don't worry too much.

Thank you for your advice. I have today rang my health visitor who is going to come into the doctor with me next baby clinic and explain that I would like him referred. Hopefully I will ge something sorted.

That sounds good - hope it goes well.

my son was the same, just one testical, he was referred and had a minor op to bring it down, everything went fine and he was in no pain afterwards, biggest problem was stopping him running around for the first couple of days lol. hope eveything gets sorted for you, keep my fingers crossed for u xx

MrsEB can I ask you something. Your son only has one testicle is that correct? My son also went through the same as yours where they said they could feel something but when they operated the testicle had not formed properly and it was removed. He is nearly 9 now but I really worry about him losing the other testicle and wondered if you have the same concerns and how you deal with it. Do you think there are more boys than we realise with this?

Just wanted to reassure you. My husband had this op as a child and we now have four children and hes had the snip as he/we seems very fertile

Flowertop · 20/05/2009 19:43

Thanks bronze. Do you think he was concerned about his other Testicle or just got used to one.

Ds1 had an undescended testicle at birth. I mean, it was really up there. After about 10 months I felt that it had come down but then started fretting that maybe I was wrong. So we eventually got a referral to a pediatric urologist. He said that both of ds's testicles had a very strong retractile reflex and the one that was originally undescended was more apparent. But, he said he could palpate all the way around both of them so not to worry and that they would probably drop more as time went by.

I do think it's a good idea to get a referral just so you know for sure.

we were referred to a paediatrician for DS1 as his right testicle was high (he had a hydroceal as a baby and were told to have his scortum examined by a GP at age 2).

At the consultation the paed said his right was fine but his left was high. So DH (a doctor) said maybe they were both highly retractile - paed agreed but wanted to do an EUA.

I suggested bringing him in as a day case and examining in a warm bath - put down immediately by paed who said a general anaesthetic was best.

We declined, and promised to keep an eye on them.

At approx age 3 DS1's scrotum became larger and both testicles began to stay descended. They still leap around, but don't disappear inside him any more.

Thank you for all your help. The gp saw ds on Thursday and he said that his left testicle had retracted further and has referred him to Alder Hey. I am glad he is at least being referred. I was happier about it until he fell yesterday and knocked his front tooth out!! Must be a boy thing, coz the day before he had managed to find a penny and nearly choked on it! Just a quick question: do they have lots of scars there after the op, and whats it like changing their nappy?
