Teenager's first filling in permanent teeth - what to expect?

The braces are off and there is apparently need for a small filling. Not sure where or how bad, think it's a back tooth. Can anyone talk me through what will happen - like will they be given an anaesthetic and how to make sure the dentist stops if they are hurting?

It's a long time since I've needed dental treatment - what materials do they use now?

I just had my braces off ,(yes I know,I am the poster girl for middle aged orthodontics)and I needed two fillings ,braces can wreak havoc with teeth in terms of holes.mine were very small and so I didn't need an anaethetic at all and they didn't hurt in the slightest.A bigger one would need a jab and my dentist asks me to hold a finger up if I feel a twinge. You can pay for white fillings (I do).

Thank you. We have a family problem with local anaethetic not being very effective. This child hasn't had local anaesthetic so I don't know if it will work normally on them -or even if dentists normally offer anaesthetic for fillings. I try very hard to avoid needing dental treatment because of some very painful past experiences.
