My son is 4 yrs, Every year we try different suntan lotions none of them work. He always gets a heat rash type spots. I can't afford to work through them again this year. What can I do? We are off to Spain in July and he'll need something. Help?

asteamedpoater Wow! Your explanation sounds very professional, if so, thank you for taking time out to help my Ds. If you are a lovely Mummy that's looked into this subject and shared your findings. Again Thank you I will add this info to my chart.
Sun has come out today so we will have a go.

I'm afraid I'm just a lovely mummy (), although from a medical family. Have been doing LOTS of research into suncreams as am totally fed up with itchy, spotty children, useless bottles of expensive suncream and an empty wallet!!!! Info from the Australian Government and the US Food and Drugs Administration, amongst others, I condsidered to be pretty reputable and well informed, though!

Ultrasun is the only one that hasn't made DS's skin sting. It is a once a day one.

CrossWhy · 11/05/2009 22:40

If its prickly heat - piriton or banadryl kids syrup.

If its eczema based Aveeno cream is fantastic though you might face a fight with your doctor to prescribe it, best to buy first from pharmacy so you can say you tried it and it worked.

Allergic reactions to suntan lotions are very common, the ambre solaire clear spray can be good as its high factor and avoids lots of the usual lotion and cream allergies.

Hi my ds also has a bad reaction to suntan lotions, this week I tried Nivea this was prob the worst reaction I have seen so far! I have been recommended green people and Im waiting for my order to arrive this week, so will let you know how they react to it.

lottiebunny · 24/05/2009 18:41

If it is actually heat rash it might not be due to the suncream. My brother suffers with bad heat rash in the summer and has to take Piriton all summer and shower a few times a day to keep his skin free of sweat.

E45 do one we had to get online for dd, she comes out in a rash after using any other brand. Worth a try.

lottiebunny · 24/05/2009 18:55

Now you say about E45 suncream I remember that brother used to have this on prescription.

Following the thread with interest ds1 has a reaction but not straight away his skin goes bumpy like he has grains of sand under the skin and he gets a bad bum for a few days. does anyones else lo get the bad bum as well? or is it just mine as usual

My DS (now 4.5 years) has exactly the same reaction to all suncreams that we tried. He comes out in an itchy red bumpy rash and it looks flippin awful. It is definitely from he suncream because if I didn't put it on (bad mummy alert!) then he was fine but as soon as I put any on then he comes out in a rash.

I was recommended to try Bergaderm mousse (used to be called Proderm) and its amazing. Its like a hair mousse that you rub into the skin and it literally doesn't feel like you've got sun cream on at all. I can't remember all the information about it now but I checked loads and loads of different suncreams and it was the only one which didn't have a specific chemical in it (although can't for the life of me remember what it was now!)and it seems to have been that which triggers DS's reaction.

I was also told my GP that its actually the higher spf suncreams/sun blocks that more frequently cause a reaction because they almost block the pores of the skin (sorry not a very technical term!) causing the spots to come up as well. The higest spf Bergaderm is available in is spf 30 but it does last 6 hours and was absolutely fine last summer.

Ive converted all the staff at DS's nursery to it as well...as well as me and DH because its so nice to use and not sticky like other suncreams!!

Hope that helps a bit!

we use E45 for our DD who appears to burn after about ten mins in the sun with full factor 40+ suncream. I actually think she's not burning but reacting to the crem, she is also allergic to face paints and has strange reactions to things like margarine and mayo, her skin goes instantly red where it has come into contact with them and fades after about an hour.
E45 seems to not make her so red but isn't ideal. She also has that spotty skin thing (can't remember its name) where the skin produces too much keretin.

hellywobs · 29/05/2009 18:02

I was going to suggest Lavera too - or Liz Earle. Dr Hauschka used to do a great one but have discontinued it because of new EU rules, as have Weleda.

Starbear · 30/05/2009 08:59

littlebrownmouse Keratosis Pilaris. I have it and so does my son. It's not itchy, just unsightly.

Okay, We are using Banana Boat as it was in our local chemist and recommend here. It seems to be working well. Ds is down the coast on a Dads and kids weekend by the sea. I'll report back how he's doing.
Last week was pretty bad for his skin as we had a Bat & Ball picnic and outdoor all day!
The rest of the week I've looked after his skin and he's been indoors most of the tme.

Thanks Starbear. I have it a bit too but not unsightly particualry. DD had it extremely severly as a baby but its hardly noticable now, we ere suddenly aware that she no longer had unsightly red spots all over her legs and arms, just one that you could feel.

Just remembered that the E45 cream we ue is 'sun relfective'. Not sure if that helps.

Starbear · 30/05/2009 23:43

yes, Thank you, it is. I've got a chart and I've cut and paste all the advice I've been given. Hope to keep a track this year.

Hi, Starbear,

Hi, Starbear. Have you had any success finding a suncream this year? We've finally had a result!!!!! I thoroughly recommend "Sunsense" - they do an adult version and a toddler milk and for the first time in his life, my son didn't react to the suncream. The other fantastic thing about it is that it rubs in incredibly easily, smells lovely and is totally non-greasy. It's the only suncream I've ever tried that I haven't strongly objected to having to smear all over my body... Oddly enough, I recently saw a dermatologist and mentioned my and my son's sunscreen sensitivity and this was the sunscreen she recommended - except, of course, by then, we'd already tried it, so I was quite chuffed.

I picked mine up in a Boots chemist tied to our GP's surgery, but I don't think Boots actually sell it in most places. However, you can buy it on Amazon.co.uk, or, presumably, from the Sunsense website. Might be worth a try for next year????
