Mirena coil question

brettgirl2 · 07/05/2009 15:39

I have just had a baby and am considering contraception options.

I was thinking about having an implant, but have previously been on Cerazette am concerned that lots of people seem to report constant spotting on implant (Cerazette had this effect on me)

So my question is that Mirena apparently makes periods 'lighter'. What does this actually mean in reality? Does it commonly cause random spotting or not? I really would appreciate people's experiences of this.

I don't want a copper coil because periods are heavy enough already and can't take combined pill. AARRGGHHH!!! My options are practically running out.

I had a mirena coil for 5 years (just had it taken out).

For the first 3 months I had light spotting and then nothing. For the last year, I had a brownie coloured discharge for a few days every month which I assumed to be a period.

I feel happier in myself since it has been taken out, I felt that I used to be a horrible shouty person whilst it was in.

Hope this helps.

Random spotting for 6 months then nothing.

Thanks ladies that sounds fairly promising.

Anyone else?

I had one for five years and never had a period or any spotting whatsoever. It was brilliant! No moods or bad effects either. I only had it taken out because I don't need contraception any more and wondered if it was making it difficult to lose weight. Sadly, I haven't lost a pound so must face the fact that gluttony and sloth are responsible for my weight, not Mirena.

I had a Mirena put in to help with heavy periods/fibroids and after years of misery it worked almost immediately. The specialist said things might get worse before they got better when I had it put in but to be honest it was like turning off a switch for me!! Brilliant.

verylapsedrunner · 08/05/2009 21:37

I've had one for 3 years and I love it (had it for heavy periods/fibroids). Spotting to start with, a couple of intermmitent (very light) period like bleeds, other than that it's been great. Concious that I am very short & shouty with DS but not sure I can attribute that to Mirena.

JackBauerKillsPigs · 08/05/2009 21:47

Hmm, don't want to bring down the thread but I have had heavier periods with my mirena than I ever had before, really bad cramps and heavy 'gushes' when bleeding. I use a mooncup which has helped with teh cramps but I can see I am losing in half a day what the 'average' period loss should be.
Although it is very eay as in not having to remmeber to take things!

I had the mirena a year after having son. I was having 2 weeks of heavy bleeding the a week none. i did a lot of internet research because i needed to stop the heavy bleeding and protect against another pregnancy effectivly as son was concieved on the pill!!

Once the coil was in i had a week of cramps since then 3 yrs later i have regular periods but sometime a bit heavy. Hard to describe but i'm happy with it's performance!

Everybody's body is different and react's in different ways. Research as much as you can before deciding.

had mirena as a treatment for heavy periods but then had continual bleeding til the womb lining became thin~about 6 mos.after that hardly any.

cheshirekitty · 08/05/2009 22:57

It takes about 4-6 months for the progesterone level in a mirena coil to become great enough to affect your endometrium (lining of the womb). Progesterone makes the lining of the womb thiner = lighter or no periods.

Mirena has a shelf life of 5 years.

You may experience spotting pv for a few months every day until about the 4th month.

But - everyone is different. I would strongly advise you to get it fitted by someone who does them often ie your family planning clinic, or menstrual dysfunction clinic.

ReneRusso · 08/05/2009 22:57

3 months of light spotting and then no periods at all for 5 years - fantastic. But I did have some benign ovarian cysts which are apparently a side effect of Mirena; these were occasionally a bit painful and annoying, but harmless i was told.

Thanks again, it's definitely true that everyone is different but it seems that only two people really hated it which seems at least more favourable than the implant.
