At soft play today with children - and I fell off a net-wall thing, had to land akwardly to avoid landing on a child - so landed on my wrist. Definetly have a radio carpal ligament injury, and xray was clear but possible scapnoid fracture and they want to repeat the xray next week.

Anyone had this? Did it show up right away? How was healing etc?

Poor you. DD has done this twice in 6 months (whilst playing Rugby!). Both time, though, they out it in plaster and it had to be reviewed in 2 weeks. After 2 weeks they x-rayed it again and replastered for another 2 weeks. So a month in plaster in total on both occasions. Have they not plastered yours?

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/05/2009 15:47

They said that it is very difficult to detect and shows up on the X-ray as a very, very fine fracture. DD was in pain for about the first week, however afterwards it wasn't at all painful for her, just inconvenient with the plaster and all.

Nope he said he wouldnt plaster it, but I am in pain and swollen at the right bits for it. Its sore but not screaming in agony sore. Its sore to move/touch but not too bad otherwise. Have it bandaged up now and given pain killers from hosp (a whole box as well! when I have been in hosp before they only gave me a couple, so I was impressed!)

I feel like I wasnt told very much, am a bit worried that if it IS broken I am going to do something to make it worse iykwim?

I am terrible I just accept and nodded at everything in A&E then now Im home Im thinking abour what I should have asked. How much should I be doing with the hand? Its too sore to do anything with now, but if pain goes before next week should I be using it?

My dad broke his arm in 3 places before Christmas and he has phoned his consultant - he thinks I should have a splint on it and I have to go in tomorrow morning to get it done. Off to childline now, will try to struggle with my left hand!!

Plaster

InternationalFlight · 07/05/2009 16:59

Do you mean scaphoid? That's the one all the Moto GP riders get.

Hope it is better soon

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/05/2009 17:00

Poor you you do sound in pain. I think at the very least you should have a splint, perhaps you should go back.

I know what you mean, it is very hard to push your case and almost argue with the medical staff, especially when you're in pain. Hope you feel better soon.

giraffesCantRunA10k · 07/05/2009 19:28

Ah yes scaphoid - its just written on my piece of paper and the H looked like a N - no wonder google wasnt helpful

My dads consultant mentioned MRI as well but will see. Going tomorrow and will get a splint on anyway.

I think you should go back and get them to plaster it as if it were a scaphoid fracture (they need to plaster it in the right position and I am not sure a splint will do the job).

The scaphoid has a blood supply and so they need to make sure it heals properly to protect the blood supply. It's also my understanding that scaphoid fractures can be hard to spot until healing has started (mine certainly was) and healing will be promoted by it being in plaster.

Yes the consultant Im seeing tomorrow said something about they see the white line come up after a week or so. (and knowing my dads breakage history - is the white line indicative of new cells? so therefore repair?)

I found this - -rays will be used to assess the bone. Sometimes, a broken scaphoid does not show up on an X-ray right away. If this is the case, the wrist might be put in a splint for a week or two. A new X-ray will be taken to see if the fracture will become visible. The splint should be worn during this waiting period, and heavy lifting should be avoided.

An MRI (magnetic resonance image) may be taken to visualize the bones and soft tissues. This sometimes shows a fracture of the scaphoid before it can be seen on an X-ray.

And am quite shocked I wasnt splinted/plastered at hosp. Am glad my dads experience in this to know to push for it, so will see what consultant says tomorrow.

Not sure what to do about work? Link says no heavy lifting. Do you think that includes heavy pushing?

Also - does anyone know if I can take diclofenac with cocodamol?
