Hi,
I have a GP appointment later this week but was wondering if anyone could advise me on what could be causing these symptoms.

I get really short of breath even when talking sometimes. The phone rang when I was pegging out the washing yesterday, I dashed in home to answer it and was completely breathless.

My resting heart rate is 80+ BPM and I just want to eat all the time even when I know i'm full.

I'm 35 don't drink don't smoke and only started to feel like this after having my 2nd dc just over a year ago before that I was really healthy.

Anyone else had experience of this and could shed some light.

Thanks. x

Anaemia can cause breathlessness?

I was anaemic the back end of last year. It was quite a relief after the breathlessness, headaches, palpitations, dizziness, being knackered and depressive mood.

Sure it'll be one of the first thing your GP tests for. Hope you get sorted soon.

No experience, but could be overactive thyroid (I'm a vet, btw, not a doctor, so don't quote me on that!!) I'm sure your doc will run some blood tests, but it's fairly easily treated, I believe (well, it is in cats!)

Thanks hawkmoth I've got to admit i'm quiet worried so I hope it is something like anaemia. I'm dreading the appointment.

Its so unlike me to be ill and i've put the appointment off for ages because i'm scared what the GP will say.

I had anaemia and was breathless and not exactly tired, but it was hard to hold myself up, iyswim. The only time I felt ok-ish was lying down on the bed, with the bed supporting me. Even then it felt like I was going to ooze through it!

Hope you get it sorted soon.

I don't want to panic you, but if you also haae any of the below symptoms, get an emergency appointment NOW. You have no time to waste.

Are you also thirsty a lot? Do you drink until you can burst and still feel thirsty? Do you get tingly feelings in your legs? Or unusual cramps.

I am worried because what you describe happened to me while on a visit to Spain four years ago. I tuuned out I had diabetes (!), not the first thing I would have thought of, since I was also very healthy.

In my case, I got worse and worse over the week and ended up in a coma (high blood sugar does that to you). I nearly died. Don't leave it this long. You can find out in 30 seconds by taking a your blood sugar with glucometer, which I am sure your practise nurse will have.

I'm not kidding. Please take me seriously.

Hi Catitainahatita
I've not been excessively thirsty and I wouldn't say that i've had cramps but my legs sometimes feel so achy and weak that I just have to sit down.

Well, you see I am not a doctor or anything and I am talking simply from my own experience, so hpefully am I'm way off the mark.

Its just that for a year before the diagnosis I was always hungry (specially for biscuits) ann could eat double portions no trouble at dinner/tea and then be snacking a couple of hours later. I also was verty tired all the tie and kept falling asleep if I sat down for too long.

In Spain I started feeling breathless and had a veryy fast heart rate. At first it wasn't very noticeable, but it got gradually worse and worse.

I wrote an email to my DH that sounded just like your post, so when I saw it i am immediately thought of what I had gone through.
However, if you aren't thirsty or going to the toliet as if you were pregnant (ie very often especially at night), which is the most noticable symptom (and the one I forgot to mention), I am probably way off.

Good luck.

80bpm is not too high tbh, so dont panic yet, long as between 60-80/90 when resting its still within normal HTH

tink123 · 04/05/2009 19:51

i would say overactive thyroid. Had same symptoms when i was overactive last year

paddyclamp · 04/05/2009 21:47

Def sounds like thyroid..my friend was like that..think she also had a funny lump in her neck though! Anyway it is treatable and she is fine now!!
