...anyone know if the two are compatible?

Will be called into school where I work later today to get it (5 kids down now, and everyone's being given it), but I expect the school nurse won't have a clue.

Any knowledgeable medical out there, please?

The BFN have a drug line you could ring

0844 412 4665

LactMed should tell you too (google it).

NeedMNJury · 04/05/2009 14:43

Info that came up when I put Tamiflu into it.

smallchange · 04/05/2009 14:44

Here's an interesting thread from a LLL forum.

The BNF says in animal studies (no humanstudies available) it has been found in milk so benefits/risks should be considered. Basically same as the above thread conclusion.

smallchange · 04/05/2009 14:45

Ooh, LactaMed data is good & v recent update.

LackaDAISYcal · 04/05/2009 14:51

I didn't think it was a preventative? If you don't actually have flu why are they giving it to you?

That aside, as it only lessens symptoms, and this round of swine flu is much milder than they anticipated, is it worth taking the medicine in the first place if it is going to possibly jeopardise your BFing relationship?

I did a quick search on lactmed and found THIS

Hulababy · 04/05/2009 14:54

LackaDAISYcal - think it can be used as a preventative measure too, like some oher drugs. They are just given in different ways and doses depending on if it is preventative or if it is to treat.

Thanks, my dears.
belgianbun, I'm in Sarf Landan (near Dulwich)

Ds is 19 months, so I guess I'll risk it. Not sure, having read the links, whether it's worth it, but I guess I should toe the school party line.

Just had the call summoning me into work to take the pill and man the phone lines for a bit, so should go and actually get properly dressed.

BB - if you;re pregnant you can take Relenza (I'm pg too and have been looking up info about it).

FR - I would think it's safe enough anyway for your DS if he's 19 months old...I think it's been approved as a drug for children over one. Hope you're all OK!

pooka · 04/05/2009 15:07

Belgianbun - I am also pregnant. Have been vaguely wondering (in the way that you do, late at night) about what would happen if I got swineflu, given that am now 22 weeks pregnant.

Would it be a case of just (hopefully) riding it out, hoping that the baby is OK. Or is it completely contraindicated (the tamiflu that is) for pregnant women?

pooka · 04/05/2009 15:08

Ah! Madamant, you have cheered me up.

Am generally very good at avoiding unnecessary panic. But come midnight, my mind does wander.... and dd is at school and seems to be a magnet for anything catching (though has been better since last year when we had an awful 8 week run of one thing after another).

ScummyMummy · 04/05/2009 15:11

Belgianbun- thanks for voicing your fears. I am in exactly the same postion- pregnant and in SE London- and was feeling the same! Um, could you give any other clues as to exactly where the school is, friby? Do you think it will close?

It does seem a bit that they are giving out tamiflu now when the the side effects from it are worse than the effects of the mild form of the flu.

Catitainahatita · 04/05/2009 16:03

Hello, I´m in Mexico and am 13 weeks pregnant, so I understand where you are coming from.

My Dr. told me that the antiviral drugs being used to treat swine flu are not recommended for pregnant or lactating women, precisely because there have been no trials done with them.
His advice to me was to stay in the house and leave ONLY when it was strictly necessary and unavoidable.

I have a 16 month old toddler and so I understand that this that last thing you want to do. I have been holed up here for a week now. We are going nuts!

If you aren't ill, why are they giving you the medicine? It seems at little overkill. Here you get if you are ill, full stop. I think the NHS must have much more back-up medicine than we do.

MintyyAeroEgg · 04/05/2009 16:12

Scummy and Belgian - it is Alleyns. Have just looked it up on Sky News Website. Am also in the neighbourhood.

It says that the five yr 7s were not in contact with the child who was in the US...so how did they get it? That's a bit scary.

SamJamsmum · 04/05/2009 16:49

ABM bf counsellors have been asked to look at this document. It is from the CDC in the US and states tamiflu is not incompatible with breastfeeding.
