HELP DH got tiny piece of glass in his foot!

DH has got a tiny tiny piece of glass stuck in his foot, we can't even see it, has bled but now stopped. We have been soaking it in hot water then sucking it with a hoover (as NHS direct suggested) but it is still in there, if you gently rub the tweezers over it you can hear it. NHS direct advised against going to a&e as it will be heaving on a bank holiday but he can't put any weight on it for fear of wedging it in. We know it should work it's way out eventually, but has anyone got any other suggestions...apart from foot amputation which is what I may do to DH if he carries on the way he is for much longer!! I know it's painful & I am symathetic to a point but goodness me the man can make a fuss!

Corn plaster so no pressure directly on it?

I had this once but it had been in there for a while, a nurse friend recommended using magnesium sulfate to draw it out. It worked a treat, not exactly something you have in the cupboard though is it.

Where would I get that from? HAve read online that Bicarbonate of Soda works....?

I know a friend had this and cut it out with sissors /gross

I'd suggest going to a&e tbh

norktasticninja · 03/05/2009 14:11

I got mine from the chemist, but it was years ago. No idea about bicarb but it probably wouldn't do any harm...

bebejones · 03/05/2009 14:12

Typical, this sort of thing ALWAYS happens on a weekend when nothing is open!! Will rush to Tesco for bicarb, this is all my fault because I broke the glass!!! He cleared it up...obviously not very well!

There is bound to be an duty pharmacist open, I'm not sure how you find out which one though. DO ask for advice from them if you go though, as I said my bit of glass had been in my foot for a while and it sounds like your DH has an open wound...

You are a woman of course it's your fault

Honestly it is so so tiny you can't even see a mark, it's not until you go over it with the tweezers you can hear it make a noise! We are quite rural here so no idea where I would find a pharmacy!

Magnesium sulphate paste should work, have you got a large Tesco/Sainsburys/Asda near you with a chemist?

pooter · 03/05/2009 14:44

i did this 6months ago - called dh home from work and he took me to a&e - where they laughed me out of the room

it really hurt the first day, but the day after it was fine! it went of its own accord.

dont go to a&e!!

norktasticninja · 03/05/2009 14:45

Try googeling out of hours pharmacy and the name of your area, you never know...

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 03/05/2009 15:00

If you have something really sharp (scapel ideally! but the edge of sharp scissors might work) you could try gently scraping the skin off the surface of his foot so that the glass is more exposed, then try using tweezers to pull it out. It would help if he soaked it in warm salt water first. It isn't as painful as it sounds!

bebejones · 03/05/2009 15:23

Tried googling pharmacies, nearest open is 15miles away! Have got some bicarb from Tesco (which doesn't have a pharmacy) Have been soaking in hot water & sucking it with hoover which loosens it but doesn't remove it, every time we go to tweeze it out it goes back in! He is looking very sorry for himself...all of this just to get out of digging the garden!!

I trod on glass when the fish tank broke. I got the glass out, and was left with a big cut, and lots of glass. It healed up in the next two weeks, but was really painful to walk on, so one day I just sat and squeezed at it, it bled again and opened up, and sure enough a piece of glass popped out - it was quite big too!
Result - foot not sore and healed quickly!

Try just a plaster with some savlon or someething on it. It should draw it out. It always works with splinters of wood.
