colposcopy and biopsy

Hi there,

My other half went for a colposcopy after having cin2 (moderate) results from her smear test. She had the laser treatment done and they also took a biopsy at the same time.

I just wanted to know why they take a biopsy and what outcomes can be expected when the results come back from this? Thanks for any help anyone may be able to give.

Hi
A tissue sample is taken to
(a) confirm the abnormality and its grade
(b) check what follow up is needed

Cytology (the smear test) is a scraping of cells from the surface of the cervix, whereas histology looks at the tissue structure to do an assessment.

There is a biopsy (usually a smaller piece of tissue approx 2mm-8mm) and a LLETZ (using a loop) which is little bigger (approx 1.5cm diameter). Laser is usually to cauterise the treated area but there are different practices.

When the colposcopy department get the report back from the histology lab, they will write to your OH with the results and what follow-up she needs. It will usually be more frequent smear tests for about 10 years.
They may want to see her back at colposcopy fo follow-up as some units like to see the patients again - it all depends on the patient and also the colposcopy unit so I can't be more specific sorry.

Yes, this is quite usual. I had CIN3, had laser treatment, all was removed, biopsy came back fine, went back for a few more appts, now have yearly smears.
