DS2 (15mo) havingn an EEG this afternoon - any tips?

Hi, after 2 seizures this week DS2 is having an EEG later to see what's going on in there.

Anyone got any tips/advice on what we & he should do?

Yesterday they said he would have to be sedated but the EEG dept. woman said they never sedate the 1st time and see if they can get a reading.
I'm wondering how still Ds will need to be for the test?
Can i give him something like Rescue Remedy beforehand to help him relax?
(is there an age limit on Rescue Remedy?)

Trying to be calm about it all but any foreknowledge would help, thanks

Hi,

My dd1 had an EEG at age 13 months following seizures. It was a few minutes long, and I had to keep her sat still on my lap. It was hard - she's very lively (had been walking since 10 months), and unfortunately the people carrying out the test were rather impatient with me for not keeping her still enough, and made me far more stressed out, which really didn't help the situation. They stuck quite a few wires to her head (no hair shaving needed), and in the end the test was carried out with no problems, and the results were negetive.

Hopefully you will have more sympathetic nurses etc. I would take his favourite cuddly toys with you, and be relaxed about the test.

I probably wouldn't give him anything to relax, you don't know how he will react to it.

Thanks Belgo - i won't give him anything. he's so tired that i've had to put him down now for a quick nap, was hoping to get him to last out so he'd be tired during the test.
ah well, what will be will be.
thanks for tip on teddy - will take his current favourite!

hope it was ok

JustKeepSwimming · 01/05/2009 17:40

Thanks Belgo

It was fine, he didn't much like the things being stuck on his head but otherwise was fine.

We were told that no-one would be looking at it until next week.
Then got a phone call at 4.45 asking us to come in tomorrow at 1pm. Not sure what to think now. Could be major stress but DH is being pragmatic so i'm trying to stay calm too.

that's interesting. what happened when he had the fits? Was he ill at all?

JustKeepSwimming · 01/05/2009 21:01

No he's not been ill at all. just exhausted afterwards.

no fever/temperature/infection to explain the fits as febrile convulsions.

that's why the docs are worried as not easily explainable.

ho hum, will have to wait and see what tomorrow brings...

thanks for the link. I've just skimmed it, I'll read it properly later. Sorry to hear it's not the best news, hope you can get a full diagnosis and effective treatment soon.
