Bleeding after sex and random bloody discharge? TMI

Have namechanged.

I have been having some problems for a few weeks, had a 4 day period last week (usually 11 days) had bloody discharge since (only noticable when wiping) and some bleeding after/during sex the other night.

The period was unusual as it was so short and started with two days of spotting and I had no pain with it.

But I've had cramping ever since.

I've been on Microgynon for 3 months and Marvelon before that, missed 3 pills last month and haven't started the next pack as have decided to TTC.

Have done a pg test to check and it was BFN.

I'm very concerned about the bleeding etc, have got drs appt tomorrow but am really nervous.

What could it be and what should I expect at the appt tomorrow?

It could well be down to the pill as you haven't been on the microgynon very long and have missed pills which can mess things up.
You are right to go and get checked, it is likely the doctor will recommend swabs to rule out infection, a smear if you are due or overdue for one and to see you back with the results.

Thanks for the response.

Should have also said that I gave birth to dd 13 months ago and also have PCOS.

It might be a cervical erosion (which is not NEARLY as scary as it sounds).
Though with the cramping it could be (given your missed pills) that you have ovulated and (please bear with me any medical MNers if I don't have this quite right, it's a while since it happened to me) that when you ovulated, a small blood vessel popped and has caused a small bleed.
SOmething a lot like this happened to me about 10 years ago, it scared the crap out of me and I went bleating off to the doctor to be reassured that it was an 'ovulation bleed', unusual but not that rare and totally harmless. But you are right to get checked, and the Dr will be happy to put your mind at rest.

As you know PCOS can cause irredular bleeding but shouldn't cause bleeding during ar after sex.
Another thing that it could be is a cervical ectropian which is basically where cells that are norammly found inside the cervix migrate down over the outside of cervix, these cells are perfectly normal but fragile and can bleed easily, an ectropian is a very common finding esp in women who take the pill.

try not to worry, don't be embarrased, chances are its nothing to worry about!

Cervical erosion sounds very scary but I'll take your word for it.

Not sure about the ovulation bleed, it took over 2 years to concieve DD because I wasn't ovulating at all.

Cervical erosion is the same as ectropian. Nothing to worry about.

Thank you, hopefully you are both right and it's nothing to worry about,

An ectropion or erosion is where the cervical epithelium is really thin and fragile. There are blood vessels just underneath the surface which can bleed quite readily on abrasion or contact.
The 'erosion' is due the physiological process that happens during puberty. The volume of the cervix expands due the increase in oestrogen. This means the endocervical canal (which connects the cervix to the uterus) is pushed outwards onto the ectocervix - so it now faces into the vagina. The canal is lined by glandular cells (to produce mucus) and these cells are very delicate.
The vagina's pH is different to the canal so the body covers over the delicate mucus-producing cells with squamous cells (like your skin) which are designed for more wear and tear/protection. Sometimes women can have a large area where the delicate glandular cells are only thinly covered by the new protective layer and as mentioned at the start there are blood vessels just underneath this means this area can bleed easily and get inflammed and irritated easily.

Think of pouting your lips out - the outside (the bit we apply lipstick to) is fairly tough in comparison to the squidgely lining of the inside of the mouth. If we went round with the bottom lip turned out, then it would also bleed.
Hope this is useful.
Hopefully your GP will be able to help and provide you with reassurance.

Hi again,

The dr thinks it could be to do with the microgynon. She's given me Utovlan (norethisterone) to hopefully stop the bleeding, have to take 2 per day for 15 days than hopefully have a normal period.

Not convinced but I'll give it a go.
