Just wondered.....

they (a doctor) said on my local BBC radio station this morning that it would be wise to set by a stock of paracetamol, calpol etc. just in case.

Anything else you are doing?

If you have any concerns you can call the pig flu hotline.
I tried earlier but all I got was crackling..

Keep breastfeeding. If you are making antibodies, they will be passed to your infant in breastmilk and reduce the severity of the infection in him or her.

BlueberryPancake · 01/05/2009 14:19

I am completely paranoiiid so I got:
long life milk
long life juice
bottled water
paracetamol-ibuprophen for us and for the kids
loo paper and soft facial tissues
a little bit more pasta/cereals/sauces than I'd usually have
A few (about 10 in total) tins of fruits and vegetables, stuff that we normally buy fresh.

Call me paranoid, I know, I don't care. All of this will be used anyway over the next few months (except maybe the tinned peas...)

pagwatch · 01/05/2009 14:21

ahhh. Apologies to puppymonkey.
I see in the round up you had already dibbed that joke

LlamaFarmerKarmaHarmer · 01/05/2009 14:22

In fact, now start breastfeeding the rest of your family also, including your teenagers and DH.

Actually, people have done this in crises but suspect we're not quite at this point

ruty · 01/05/2009 14:24

i have actually started to wonder whether Tamiflu is harmful to baby when you are breastfeeding...maybe beneficial though if you're all swining

ruty · 01/05/2009 14:25

baby tapped post prematurely but you get the gist.

MerryMarigold · 01/05/2009 14:26

OK, I don't get time to read papers or watch the news at the moment, so I don't have a clue about this. I think my ds1 my have it though. We've been to hospital twice this week cos he disclocated his thumb. He has been in bed asleep with a high temperature all morning. Clearly he caught SOMETHING at the hospital. I am not overly worried about him (he's not having fits or anything and calprofen is working to calm it), but what is the advice? Do you need to let someone know for 'stats'? Should he not come into contact with people for a certain amount of time? Etc.

Other than that I am doing nothing. I doubt dh and I will get sick at the same time. If we do, I do have friends I can ask to do a bit of shopping for me. I am more worried about how I will look after twin babies and a toddler if we're both sick. Can't stockpile babysitters!!!

Horton · 01/05/2009 14:46

Tinned peas make really nice soup, Blueberry. Or do them with onion and lettuce like petits pois a la francaise and pretend that was your plan all along...

Horton · 01/05/2009 14:48

I'm guessing your DS more than likely has a cold, Merry. But if he should get really ill, you should certainly phone NHS Direct or your GP. Yes, if he really were to have swine flu, people need to know that. What about others at school/nursery/toddler group etc? However, having said that, a high temperature does not mean he has flu, either normal or piggish.

Housemum · 01/05/2009 15:07

Had a bit of a headache this morning but saw the empty bottle and realised it was just wine flu...

hee hee

ds has no cold, well no snot. he's been asleep from 9am till now! Blissful in some ways...I s'pose I should ring GP but really don't want a hospital trip.

PMSLBrokeMN · 01/05/2009 16:05

Has anyone read this yet? Virus is 'a mild strain'

Chellesgirl · 01/05/2009 16:16

A 13 yr old down the road from the house i nanny at:where child b goes to school has just been quarenteened for 2 weeks by hospital. School fortunately never let him back after he came off holiday from mexico 2 days ago! A lady 12 miles away has been quarenteened for 2 weeks also, but is now after 7 days ok, and has been told to stay in her house as a precaution.

Im going Asda tonight!

ruty · 01/05/2009 16:18

that is very reassuring and i heard the same on the news last night. But the question remains, why the high death toll in Mexico?

mosschops30 · 01/05/2009 16:20

why are they being put in quaranteen for two weeks surely they are testing possible cases and that result comes back within a reasonable amount of time.
I dont think they are randomly quaranteening (?sp) people without knowing if they have the strain

flymetothemoon · 01/05/2009 16:27

PMSL - read that too and find it very reassuring indeed. See....when I bought those masks I did tempt fate!

Chellesgirl · 01/05/2009 16:44

They makesure people isolate themselves if they show any flu like symptoms.

Ive "heard" that if it gets to level 6 that we ALL have to stay in our houses for 2 weeks! I dont see how they will ensure that one

MrsJamesMartin · 01/05/2009 16:46

Make sure you and your family know your NHS numbers.

Horton · 01/05/2009 16:53

Where did you hear that, Chelle? It sounds a bit odd. How on earth will they be able to enforce it and how do they think the infrastructure of the country could operate with nobody to run power stations, sewage plants etc? I'm pretty sure that's just scaremongering. More likely is that if it gets to stage 6, you may not want to put kids etc at risk of catching the virus so will be likely to self-quarantine except for essential journeys.

flymetothemoon · 01/05/2009 16:54

To clarify - I wasn't PMSL at the article but was replying to PMSL's post

Horton · 01/05/2009 16:54

"why are they being put in quaranteen for two weeks"

To ensure that, should they develop H1N1, they cannot infect anyone else, I suppose.

mosschops30 · 01/05/2009 16:59

yes but lots of people have flu and cold symptoms, theyre not in quarantine. What I meant was have they travelled back from mexico, if they havent then it seems a bit
(oh think ive just seen that they have)

If this does become pandemic then the infrastructure of the country will be disrupted as people will be too ill to go to work, and some people wont go for fear of infection, which is why dh will be shouting through the letterbox saying 'please can I share the bottled water you stockpiled' and I'll be waving through the double glazing
